And then there were five. The field for the 2026 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award has been narrowed to five outstanding women. This writer believes the most outstanding of that group to be Mia Nicastro, a graduate of St. Charles West and who is now a senior at Western Illinois University. The winner will be announced on April 1. However, Mia is focused on leading her Leathernecks into March Madness as they await their opponent to be named on Selection Sunday. After desegregation in the mid-1950s, the school’s role shifted, and it graduated its final high school class in 1955. Although its original academic function ended, Franklin’s legacy continues through the stories of its alumni and ongoing efforts to recognize its history.

For more than half a century, Franklin was the only high school for Black children in the county. Its classrooms and hallways fostered pride, community and achievement for generations of families.

Our varsity teams proudly wore Franklin green jerseys in tribute.
We welcomed alumni back for an evening of remembrance and celebration, including 100-year-old alumnus Thomas Stephenson, Class of 1943. Stephenson delivered the honorary tipoff before the varsity boys' game.
