SD Wildland Fire (SDWF)

SDWF and SD Army National Guard held aerial water delivery recertification training Friday.  Black Hawk helicopter personnel practiced water drops on ground targets simulating a wildfire.  The annual joint training also provides live experience for interagency ground personnel.

UPDATE: Murphy Fire 1pm MDT Forward Progress Stopped Estimated Acres: 423 Containment: 10% Fire Reported: 4/22/26 at 11:53 pm Windy conditions continue as crews work to strengthen the fire line around the fire perimeter.

State, fed, and local resources are engaging in Initial Attack on active wildfire burning a combination of timber and grass near Hermosa in SW SDThere is fire line around perimeter but no official containment. Shorb and Murphy Roads are closed. No structures lost at this time.

Red Flag Warnings are in effect for large portions of SD today (Sun) through 9 pm MT/10 pm CT. Very dry vegetation, low RH, winds gusting up to 35 mph, and high temps create critical fire weather conditions. An RFW indicates a high risk for wildfires to start and rapidly spread.
