SEIU Healthcare President @downeyty brought our members’ voices to the Home and Community Care Conference this afternoon as part of the “Building the Home Care Workforce Canada Needs: From Pressure to Sustainable Scale” panel. Alongside leaders from across the sector, he made one thing clear: the people doing this work every day must be at the centre of the solutions. Real change will take real collaboration. Workers, unions, employers, and government must come together to build a system that is stable, sustainable, and supports the people who keep it running. When workers have the support they need to stay and grow, the entire home care system is stronger. @SparkConfer

Home care workers play an important role in supporting people and families across Ontario. Sitting down yesterday with members of @SEIUHealthCan to hear their stories of determination and resilience was truly inspiring. I look forward to working together on the sector’s priorities!

Thank you to Ontario Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini for joining SEIU Healthcare President Tyler Downey and more than 20 homecare members at our head office this morning. Minister Piccini heard directly from the frontline; powerful, personal stories that underscored the realities of the job. Members spoke about shift instability, ongoing health and safety risks, low wages, lack of access to WSIB coverage, and the burden of out-of-pocket costs like parking while on shift. These are not new challenges, but they are urgent ones. Our members made it clear: real change is needed to ensure homecare jobs can become sustainable, long-term careers.

These are the faces of our union. Women who organize. Women who lead. Women who fight for justice at work and in our communities. Happy International Women’s Day. 💜

Don Valley West values its healthcare workers. I joined @SEIUHealthCan, who represent over 70,000 frontline workers in Ontario, for their annual Turkey Day. More than 25,000 turkeys are being distributed, including 1,000 at the Loblaws at 3501 Yonge St., in appreciation of SEIU members.

Solidarity today and every day. 🏳️‍⚧️💜 On Transgender Day of Awareness, we stand with our trans and gender-diverse members, coworkers, and community. Our union’s fight for justice is at the core of everything we do. We’re committed to building workplaces where everyone is safe, respected, and able to show up as their full selves. That means confronting discrimination wherever it appears, advancing inclusive policies, and ensuring LGBTQ2+ workers receive the dignity, protections, and support they deserve.

This morning our President @downeyty welcomed Brampton North—Caledon MP @rubysahotalib and Eglinton-Lawrence MP @vgasparro to hear directly from our members about how the $1,100 PSW Tax Credit will make a real difference in their lives. The emotional stories of struggle shared by our members brought many in the room to tears, but they also highlighted the real hope that this tax credit can bring to PSWs and their families. We are hopeful that parliamentarians from all parties will come together to pass Budget 2025 and the PSW Tax Credit - because care can’t wait.
