This past week, we had the opportunity to participate in Genocide Awareness Week at Arizona State University and present and exhibit at Grand Canyon University. Our participation at Arizona State University, along with our panel and exhibit at Grand Canyon University, created space for the Assyrian Genocide to be examined in academic and public settings. These sessions brought together guest professors, researchers, students, faculty, and community members for historical analysis, discussion, and education. Bringing this history into universities helps expand awareness, support serious scholarship, and ensure it is studied with the attention it deserves. During the Assyrian Genocide of 1915 - 1918 Assyrian refugees from Hakkari seeking missionary help in Salmas, Iran. During the Assyrian Genocide (Seyfo-Sayfo) of 1915–1918, Ottoman forces and allied Kurdish groups carried out massacres and forced expulsions against Assyrian Christians in the Hakkari mountains, destroying ancient villages and uprooting entire tribal communities. Thousands were killed, and survivors were driven from their homeland. Many fled on foot across the mountains into northwestern Iran, especially to Salmas and Urmia, seeking safety and missionary aid. Even there, they faced hunger, disease, and renewed violence. Families walked for days through cold mountain passes, carrying only what they could hold — children, a few belongings, and their faith. Entire generations were lost, and centuries-old villages were left silent. Initiative, a voluntary civic effort designed to strengthen self-identification, reinforce historical continuity, and promote unity beyond ecclesiastical or regional divisions. The initiative also aims to support clearer global demographic representation through grassroots organization and civic engagement.
