Schools and Colleges Careers Outreach in Somerset

This academic year the Simulation Outreach Facilitator role has allowed us to work with 43 different schools to provide NHS careers outreach. Across visits with nurseries, schools, colleges, non-mainstream settings and public events we've reached approximately 4794 young people!

Yesterday we visited IKB School in Wellington to talk about #dentists and #dentalnurses. The children shared what they knew about how both roles can support with oral hygiene and we talked about what they do for their own teeth too. #NHS #NHSJobs @HealthCareersUK

Yesterday I spent the day @longsuttonsch. We talked about a huge range of roles, including dental nurses, stoma nurses and clinical cardiac scientists. The children were so inquisitive and enthusiastic. Thanks to Portia from the school nursing team for joining me! #NHSJobs #NHS

Today I popped back to @TheMendipSchool to meet lots of the secondary aged children. I had a lovely time talking about how the #NHS looks after us, playing with some of the equipment such as bandages and stethoscopes and also helping to ease some of the anxiety around doctors.

Today we visited St Joseph and St Teresa Primary School in Wells. We chatted about #AlexanderFleming and how important #penicillin has been to healthcare, #FlorenceNightingale and her impact on nursing and also how we can keep ourselves safe, including dialing 999.

Today we visited Bridgwater College Academy and talked to the Year 8s about #NHSCareers. We tried to show the breadth of roles including #healthcarescientists, #AHPs, #NHSEstatesandFacilities and #healthinformatics. #NHS #NHSJobs

Today we took the #TeddyHospital to @TheMendipSchool and had a wonderful day with lots of the primary children playing and exploring the ways we could look after the teddies - and sometimes each other too! Thank you to all of the children and staff for making me feel so welcome!

Today I visited North Town Primary School in Taunton! Teddy hospital with Nursery had lots of great language around looking after people, doctors and nurses. Then an amazing Year 4 @ScienceWeekUK chat including #sleepphysiologist, Analytical Toxicologists and Genomic Scientists!

Today we are sharing our outreach offer with some of our local non-mainstream schools, for example those offering support to young people with learning disabilities and SEMH needs. Looking forward to sharing what we do and seeing how we can work together in the future!
