Billionaires are fucking boring. Your mega mansions with all-white furniture make me sick. How could you have that kind of money and not live in a haunted castle with a moat, hedges shaped like animals, and a groundskeeper with a questionable past?

Earlier this month, I flew a complete stranger all the way from Boston to Los Angeles for dinner. And, after three hours together (filled with seafood and stories), I believe Danielle and I left that dinner as new friends. In late 2016, I had this idea of traveling somewhere with someone I absolutely didn’t know — just to see how it would go — because, in my own experiences, I consistently found that the random people I met while traveling were often more memorable than the places themselves. And, after so many years of sharing my travels and life on Instagram, I thought, “Why not just take someone who’s followed me and supported my work along for the ride?” And, like this, the idea for “Stranger Danger” was born . . . For those of you who might be unfamiliar with it, Stranger Danger involved flying myself and a complete stranger out to a city of their choosing to spend three or four days together, while I footed the entire bill. The “contest” (if you want to call it that) was open to any and all subscribers of my old “Dear Captain” newsletter. To enter, you had to submit a short essay describing where you’d like to go (any city in the U.S. was fair game) and why. I would then read through each and every email received before selecting the person that I felt would get the most out of the experience . . . Someone who had always dreamed of going to New York for the holidays, someone who craved the polar opposite of their hometown, or someone who could seriously benefit from simply getting out of their comfort zone. In this way, I ended up in New Orleans, Saint Augustine, Austin, Detroit, and Boston with people that I’d never met before connecting in the airport. And, guess what? It was fucking awesome. I had a lot of fun doing it, I learned a lot (these trips often got me out of my own comfort zone), and it felt good to share the experience with someone that I felt really deserved (or needed) it. From 2017 to 2019, I completed five rounds of Stranger Danger before my lawyer advised me to stop because I was putting myself at too much risk — to which I responded, “Well, yeah, ‘danger’ is in the name.” And I had every plan of going forward with five more rounds, but the second half of 2019 took a few unexpected turns, becoming a hard year for me personally. And, well, 2020-2022 was a terrible time to travel. So, Stranger Danger kind of just faded away . . . But I always wanted to bring it back in some way, and this led me to the idea for STRANGER DINNER — and it’s now time for ROUND TWO. Here’s what STRANGER DINNER R2 will consist of: - I’ll fly you out to Los Angeles (where I currently live), or cover any other form of transportation to get you here: train, Uber, bobsled, hang glider, etc. - I’ll put you up in a nice hotel for a night or two (don’t worry, I’ll pick something historic or simply fucking cool — trust me on this, I know what I’m doing). - We’ll meet for dinner at a restaurant of your choice, or one of my own — it’ll be up to you (obviously, I will cover this as well). This dinner will allow us to spend a few hours together, talking about anything and everything that comes to mind. If you have something you’d like to ask, just ask. If you just want to hang out, we’ll hang. This will also be my way of saying “Thank you” for all the support that I’ve continually received over the years. HERE’S HOW TO ENTER: 1) Join my Substack as a paid subscriber (any tier is qualified): SGRSTK.SUBSTACK.COM 2) Send an email to STRANGERDINNER@SGRSTK.COM with the following information: - A bit about yourself. No more than 100 words. Anything more than that and we are no longer “strangers,” which kind of defeats the purpose. - Answer this question: If you could have dinner with any person (alive or dead), who would it be, and why? I know this is a common, and perhaps even cliché question, but I do believe there’s a lot revealed about an individual by those chosen to sit at their table. That’s it. Once you’ve done that, you’re officially entered. You have until THE END OF APRIL to send your email. I will read through every entry, contact and announce the winner by the end of May, then fly them out shortly after (if you’re selected, I’ll work with you to see what works best for both of our schedules). I’m looking forward to reading through all of your emails and getting together soon for some good food and good conversation. Thank you for all the continued support. —KC

It's Friday, you want to party with your friends tonight, but what if your dog has a nice evening planned? Did you even think about that?

I’ve moved ten times in ten years. I’ve lived in five different states, on both coasts, on the 42nd floor of a high-rise tower, on a dirt road in the country with well water, and I’ve experienced both the extreme highs and the crushing lows of my career as a writer. And, I can tell you with utmost certainty, who you surround yourself with matters more than anything.

The upside of algorithms constantly changing is that only those who create truly for the love of creating will remain. If you’re in it for quick fame, you’re not in it for the long game. And the long game is where real creators and artists are born.

The death of a dreamer is a hard thing to witness. We see people who were once filled with ambition and light become silent and dim. People we once looked to as shining examples of how to live become shadowed memories of what has been. People who once seemed like they were destined to change the world slowly succumb to the trials of the world. Harder still is when you realize that the dreamer who has died is the one within you. As if you’ve been living as a voyeur of your past life rather than an active participant in your current life. The truth is: life will beat the shit out of you. You will lose money, friends, family, and opportunities. But of all the things that you must hold on to — no matter how many times life hits you — your ability to dream is most crucial. You must believe that you can make things better, and that you alone can make things happen for yourself and others. A dreamer is not someone who sits idle waiting for their life to change, a dreamer is someone who chooses to challenge reality each day by saying, “I refuse more of the same.” Dreams are, in fact, the antidote to death. Without a dream, you may be alive — but you will often feel like you’ve already died.

What society needs right now is an entire populace engaged in critical thinking. Question what you're being told, remain skeptical of the information you're hearing, and don't be afraid to analyze before believing. Treat the media like a cheating ex — keep your fucking guard up.

You don't need a "happily ever after," you need someone who makes you realize what matters. And, that person will be a pain in the ass.

I’m not going to lie, I’ve felt pretty hopeless lately. And I’m fucking tired of feeling this way. (I know I’m not the only one.) This Epstein shit is insane. How can we allow so much corruption and manipulation to continue at the highest levels of our country? I’m genuinely asking because I don’t have the answers — but I’m writing this in the hope that somebody with more legal, government, or media experience does. How can we come together in a way that will actually do something? How can we really support and encourage those who are in positions to enact real change? It’s one thing to have a platform and to share strongly worded opinions, but what is the actual “We ride at fucking dawn” moment that puts something significant in motion?

It’s hard to comprehend the level of evil that existed (and still exists) within Epstein’s circle. Even harder still, to comprehend the level of corruption (and cowardice) that is being exhibited to protect this shit. The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced that what we've seen is purely meant to make us feel powerless. It's an exercise in demoralization, not justice.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the world is already drowning in "content." We don't need more of it. We need more art. We need more emotion. We need more statues and gargoyles atop grand and beautiful buildings. We need a haunted forest and stories that inspire us to see through the darkness. We need more mystery, creativity, and authenticity. We need more life.

Social media is weird because it alienates us from each other while at the same time being the only reason everyone is so united in their understanding of how stupid and corrupt governments are.

You must move through life believing it’s all going to work out. If you’re constantly hedging your bets, planning for the worst, or guarding your heart, you are going to close yourself off before things even have a chance to start. Remain open and expect the unexpected, rigid energy is disappointment's favorite recipe.
