This recent article in the @guardian makes me also wonder how the increasing use of #AI and on-animal sensors on #dairy farms may jeopardise our GHG emissions reductions goals 🌏 we need to consider if the benefits outweigh the unintended consequences of these technologies

@Aiden_C7 What a miserable person to do that to someone, as I'd say to my 3 year old nephew.... use your words? A polite conversation would have sufficed 🤦‍♀️

A positive news story from Dr Winston Mason from EpiVets where he determined the median prevalence of lameness on dairy farms in New Zealand was 2.8% indicating we are world leading in lameness prevalence with weighted averages globally sitting around 22% 🤯 #NZVA2024

Interesting perspective from Kirsten Baxter @Zoetis of the 100 largest economies, 69 are companies and 31 are countries, emphasizing that #market forces may be more important than government policy and progress towards sustainability goals need to continue regardless of politics

Opportunities for improvement include options for heat mitigation, provision of water in summer and autumn and provision of lying surfaces and mitigation of cold stress during winter and spring 🌱

Overall our farms are meeting the nutritional and health needs of our cows and are mostly providing environments that minismise negative experiences

Kicking off day 1 of the #NZVA2024 conference presenting work undertaken by a group of researchers at @DairyNZ to understand whether our NZ dairy farm systems provide a good life for dairy cows 🐄 A thread 🧵

Hey managers: to keep your people, let them work from home 2 days a week. Landmark experiment (1600+ ppl, 2yrs): random assignment to hybrid work -Increased satisfaction -Reduced quitting by 33% (especially for women & long commuters) -No costs for performance or promotion rates

@m_herbert Married on the farm with cows in the background and reception at the local town hall with local vendors, the whole wedding was much cheaper than if we had used a commercial venue, also having no wedding party is a good cost saving! x.com/SHendriks_PhD/…

From the personal vault 🥰 tell me you're a dairy farmers daughter without telling me you're a dairy farmers daughter ❤️ pretty special to get married in my parents backyard, even delayed grazing a little so I'd have cows behind me, it was so grounding, love these animals 🐄

The idea that a woman's career comes at the expense of her family, while a man's career is seen as a way to support his family, is rooted in sexist stereotypes and reinforces harmful gender roles. Challenge sexism. Choose equality.

Follow closely this great farmlets research out of @TasInAg in partnership with @Dairy_Australia. The farmlets project is set to investigate on-farm strategies to reduce N fertilizer input while achieving high levels of pasture and milk production 🌾 🐮
