A dress code at an HBCU became national news this week. It is worth asking why. I have served at five HBCUs. Every one of them had a dress code, and most had one long before I arrived. Edward Waters University @ewctigers has had ours for decades: what is expected at Convocation, what is not appropriate in a classroom building or the dining hall, how a student requests religious accommodation, how a student appeals a decision they believe was unfair. None of it is novel. None of it was covered. The policy is never the story. The name attached to it is. That asymmetry is familiar to anyone who works at these institutions. Do something well for a decade and it goes unremarked. Do something ordinary with the right name on the door and it runs everywhere. We are covered episodically, usually when there is a controversy to attach, and rarely when there is remarkable work to be chronicled or described. I would also say this. A dress code is only as real as its enforcement. The handbook language is the easy part, and every institution has it. The harder question, and the one nobody covers, is whether any of us actually enforce what we have written. Whether a faculty or staff member who turns a student around at the dining hall door feels supported when they do. Whether the standard holds when nobody is watching. I do not raise that as a claim about any institution, including my own. I raise it because it is the actual measure, and it is the one thing a news cycle about policy language will never tell you. We are not in the business of respectability for its own sake. We are in the business of preparing students who are overwhelmingly low-income descendants of American chattel slavery for rooms neither they nor often anyone in their families have ever entered. That work has been going on at HBCUs for generations, mostly without anyone writing about it.
