Independence Day should be a time of celebration. But 63 years today, while we were given independence by Great Britain, we’re yet to RECLAIM FREEDOM in its truest sense. Like our nation, our democratic institutions are either non-functioning or lacking functional autonomy. Our deeply polarised politics has affected every nook and sphere of our democracy. The Bar association, like our nation, Sierra Leone 🇸🇱 has been rendered ineffective at least for the last ten years by its debilitating failure to be independent. That is why on this day, as we reflect on all that is paradoxical about our independence, I encourage all lawyers and members of the legal community to take a moment and resolve to RECLAIM the Bar and reposition it as the primus defender of our nation’s independence in all facets. Some nations were given independence on a silver platter, some others strove for independence by reclaiming it with unity of purpose and determination. The Bar association, unless it is reclaimed from the forces and interests intended to keep it perpetually moribund, the nation’s independence would always be a facade. No nation can truly relish independence when the efficacy of its foremost democratic institutions and pressure groups are trammelled by political machinations. And so, on this day of independence commemoration, let us make a bold commitment to RECLAIM the Bar. By so doing, we shall be taking one of the first needed steps to RECLAIM our nation’s independence in all spheres. Let’s reclaim the Bar together! Let’s reclaim our nation’s independence! I wish you all an Independence Day of deep and sobering reflections and introspection which I invite you all to punctuate with a social rendezvous at Toma Garden Resort this evening to restate, by social interaction, our unity even in diversity but more importantly, our commitment to RECLAIM the Bar. Data image below shows overseas travelling costs incurred by the government of Sierra Leone since 2018. In USD terms, here are the figures: 2018—USD 3,484,000 2019—USD 4,235,000 2020—USD 2,825,000 2021—USD 2,201,000 2022—USD 6,254,000 2023—USD 8,920,000 In total, the government has spent approximately USD28M on overseas travelling since 2018. Information in the public is that our govt. owes the Turkish Kapowership the sum of USD27M for electricity services from 2022 to date. The right person for the Sierra Leone Bar Association🙌🏼

With all respect due to our lawmakers, STATE OF EMERGENCY is reserved for our most extreme and urgent circumstances which gravely affect the wellbeing and safety of a part or the whole of our country. The Kush crisis is a NATIONAL CAUSE for CONCERN no doubt but it does not merit the invocation of a State of Public Health Emergency. A presidential declaration of Kush as a public health emergency with the attendant robust state policies and actions should just be enough! The framers of our Constitution and indeed the spirit of the textual provisions do not contemplate the suspension of rights and the permissible deviation from due processes whenever there’s a national response against a drug menace without more. STATE OF EMERGENCY should be our LAST resort in all national emergencies and not our very FIRST. #ReclaimTheBar🇸🇱

The Bar should not be an extension of any political party, but an establishment that’s supposed to put government on its toes and promote the tenets of democracy and the rule of law. The song has been sung. The trumpets have been blown. The time is upon us. We must come together with one voice and reclaim that which has been stolen from us. This is about the soul of democracy. Our profession is on the brink. There is no better time to elect @SoeMarrah.

Today I unveiled the overview of my 5-point vision for the presidency of the bar and officially commenced my in-person campaign. I have received heartwarming response from both older and younger practitioners who desire to have a bar emancipated from partisan hegemony. I am especially excited by the thrusting energies of young colleagues who are poised to have a bar defined by competence, excellence and pursuit of a common purpose. They have chorused in unison that the bar should not be an errand-boy of any political party but the respected WATCH-WOMAN of our democracy. I have reiterated my promise that this is possible under my leadership. That a new, free and noble bar is achievable. And the young hands and hearts are the trusted social engineers to make this HAPPEN. #WeAreReclaimingtheBar 🇸🇱 #TheReclaimers
