Context matters. The City's decision to settle this lawsuit should not overshadow the challenging and dangerous circumstances officers faced while responding to a protest. We continue to stand behind the men and women who serve St. Louis. "While the City of St. Louis chose to settle and give tens of thousands of dollars to the Aldermanic President, an elected official, it should not diminish the bravery, sacrifice and professionalism of the officers who faced life-threatening violence that night. We stand by the brave men and women who risk their lives to serve St. Louis."

Earlier this month, #SLMPD District 5 officers responded to the scene of an accident in the Skinker-DeBalivere neighborhood where a vehicle struck a pedestrian and then fled the scene. Officers were provided a description of the suspect vehicle and were quickly able to locate it nearby. During a search of the vehicle, officers located a firearm and a large quantity of suspected marijuana which was packaged for individual sale. Removing illegal guns and drugs from our community is one of the many ways your officers continue investing in safer neighborhoods.

What began as officers responding to a parking lot takeover led to a pursuit, a fleeing driver attempting to strike a police officer, the recovery of an illegally configured firearm, and the safe recovery of an 8-month-old child. Around 1am on Sunday, the #SLMPD responded to a gas station on Hall Street near Gimblin Street after vehicles had taken over the parking lot. While clearing the vehicles, detectives observed a silver Ford Focus recklessly maneuvering through traffic and attempted a traffic stop. Rather than stopping, the driver fled southbound on Hall Street. During the pursuit, a SLMPD officer deployed spike strips in an effort to safely end the pursuit. The driver turned the vehicle toward the officer, forcing the officer to jump out of the way to avoid nearly being struck. The pursuit ended near Adelaide Avenue and Interstate 70, where the driver, an adult female of Hazelwood, was taken into custody. A passenger from north St. Louis County, an adult female, resisted officers during the arrests but was taken into custody. Officers also discovered an 8-month-old child had been inside the vehicle. A guardian of the child responded to the scene and took custody of the infant. During the investigation, the SLMPD recovered a short-barreled rifle equipped with an extended magazine and a foregrip from the vehicle. A third occupant, an adult man of Moscow Mills, was also taken into custody. All three individuals arrested reside outside the City of St. Louis. The vehicle was towed as evidence, and all three suspects were transported to the Justice Center. The investigation remains ongoing, and charges will be presented to the Circuit Attorney’s Office.

Investing in Safety means proactively removing dangerous weapons before they’re used in a violent crime. Earlier today, while patrolling the O’Fallon neighborhood, #SLMPD Anti-Crime Task Force detectives observed multiple individuals carrying firearms. As detectives attempted to investigate, several individuals tool off running. Detectives safely took multiple suspects into custody and recovered multiple firearms, including weapons equipped with illegal conversion devices capable of fully automatic fire. Every illegal firearm removed from our streets represents another step toward a #SaferSTL.
