@kelums @ravinda88 Blaming railways after incidents won't fix anything. Drivers have avoided many elephant collisions, but no one talks about or appreciates that.

@kelums @ravinda88 As far as we know, locomotive drivers have informed relevant authorities to clear at least 5-15m along the rail track, but it seems no action has been taken. The Wildlife Conservation Department, being experts, should lead coordination between the railway and other parties.

Clean the bush at least 20 m either side. Jungle has crept almost up to the line in many spots. Installing thermal image cams on board these few night time locos wont cost millions. A disaster like this will cost far more.

@xAQSLK therefore the best option is to leave Colombo in the evening and run at night continuously when traffic is less.

@xAQSLK Beyond train scheduling, many factors including loading/unloading/shunting times at terminals/stations, morning and evening traffic on the mainline, limited crossing loops, stopping at certain stations for longer periods may cause safety risks, and etc.

Another disaster 🚨 Oil train No. 6493 - with the load, from Colombo to Batticaloa, derailed near the Minneriya railway station after colliding with a herd of elephants - two died. As a result, train operations on the Eastern railway line have been disrupted. #lka #srilanka

The express train scheduled to depart from South Kalutara to Maradana at 7:00 AM has been delayed due to a sudden fire in the train engine. The Kalutara Municipal Council Fire Department is currently engaged in extinguishing the fire. #lka #srilanka #railway

This is happening too frequently, people will soon get used to it as the norm. Govt needs to figure out a way to fund #railway maintenance, gnoring this critical issue is not acceptable.
