The United Kingdom has demanded that 4chan pay a £520,000 fine for failure to comply with UK age verification laws. However, since 4chan is based in the USA, the UK has no jurisdiction to fine Americans in America. “As has been explained to your agency, ad nauseam, the United Kingdom lost the American Revolutionary War. We are not in the mood to discuss the matter further, and have not been in the mood for 250 years.” The letter to the UK’s Ofcom ended by suggesting that “maybe, you could just stop sending Americans stupid letters and acknowledge the sovereignty of the United States.” 4chan’s attorney, @prestonjbyrne also included a picture of a giant hamster dressed as Godzilla.

Pre-emptive reply to the horde of 4chan hamsters spamming "just use a VPN": Yes, VPNs exist. But when AU/NZ ISPs blocked the site in 2019, ~90% of the regional traffic vanished overnight. Casual users don't buy VPNs just to read green text. If the UK pulls the plug, you lose over a million users instantly. Keep coping. 🐹

@LundukeJournal This macho ‘you can’t fine us’ posture misses the point: they can ignore the invoice, sure — and then watch 4chan get shut out of the UK.

They can and they will. Providing services in other countries requires companies to comply with local laws. If a company refuses to comply, they get fined. Simple as that. We don't eat corporate BS for breakfast - the Old Continent runs on the rule of law, not the rule of the rich.

@SLS_0x @LundukeJournal Shutting off a service is one thing Uk can do that if they want But they can’t impose fines on American companies

@wilsonbosc0 @SpartanX92 @LundukeJournal no last word for u or me. The time will tell who was right. I am taking my stance from the rule of law, you from something else. We shall wait for official outcome, before bashing our horns again :D

@SLS_0x @SpartanX92 @LundukeJournal I know you're desperately trying to get a last word in, but the fact of the matter is that they have historically never paid any fines, and they'll continue to do that. I await your next mic drop and animated gif

@SpartanX92 @wilsonbosc0 @LundukeJournal Try to read? Already replied about that to your comment - not everyone going to bother to use VPN. It is cheaper for 4chan to pay the fine and comply to the host country laws then get banned.

@SLS_0x @wilsonbosc0 @LundukeJournal What are you going to do to them their infrastructure isn't in the UK and there's no reason for any of its higher ups to ever travel there it's user base in the UK would likely just download vpns which can be done easily

everything. You can bet everything that 4chan will bend the knee or will get banned and will pay the fee. Open any polybet for it and send me the link- It's not the question about will they use or not, the question is does 4chan will be willing to risk it and see how many won't be using VPN?

@SLS_0x @LundukeJournal How much do you want to bet that most of the people who use 4chan are just going to use vpns to access it anyways

@SLS_0x @LundukeJournal 4chan doesn't follow the same model as traditional corporations so don't expect it to bend over like a typical US business

@wilsonbosc0 @LundukeJournal Sure. Yet somehow American corps can't stop paying fines in EU-UK-IRL. Tens of millions of EUROS every year. We do appreciate the support ofc. But you are right my friend.

@wilsonbosc0 @LundukeJournal Not everyone is so addicted to it, to bother themselves with VPN. Go start Polybet or something - Will 4chan pay or not. Just don't bet your house based on a false assumption of American corporate power over other countries. Especially if those are in the old continent :P

@mybenxtime @LundukeJournal When you run a business - you want to make sure that your product is as easy to reach/use as possible. Meaning that pushing your clients to use VPN will cost you more than paying a fine and being compliant in the host country. This was eli5👶 for you. Doubt it helped tho...

I noticed something interesting: Claude Code auto-adds itself as a co-author on every git commit. Codex doesn’t. That’s why you see Claude everywhere on GitHub, but not Codex. I wonder why OpenAI is not doing that. Feels like an obvious branding strategy OpenAI is skipping.

@SLS_0x @LundukeJournal No one cares about the UK mate. It’s a Muslim nation who’s abandoned their people & customs while simultaneously losing its ability to project force or even defend itself.
