@stephmurrayyyy Same. Yesterday I asked my husband what size shorts would he buy for our youngest son this summer, if he had to guess, and his response was “What height setting do we use on the lawnmower, if you had to guess?”

Sometimes I hear ppl say that the woman is the CEO of the home while the man is CEO of making money or whatever. In my household it's more like my husband is the CEO of the home & I'm CEO of the kids. Our house would actually fall apart (literally) without him. It's a good setup!
Stephanie H. Murray@stephmurrayyyy

Tbh 1 reason I don't often write abt the gender housework gap/mental load etc is that I am married to someone who takes responsibility for a ton of stuff around the house (IOW I often *don't* have to ask) & it is objectively great & does make me feel loved so. yea. Give it a try.

@mjwgoblue @LenaKauffman Sorry, you seem nice and knowledgeable but we’re not allowed to have a fourth “Wilk” person in #a2schoolboard conversation. I won’t allow it. We need to start referring to trustees by first name; it’s too confusing. 😆

@LenaKauffman there are others that blatantly violate Dana Nessel's OMA handbook limiting the overall speaking time of speakers in total is one I recall

#a2schoolboard meeting starts with a surprise. Trustee Wilkerson says they got new information that will be shared with all the trustees in closed session and they will discuss the public commentary policy and then may vote tonight.

@LenaKauffman We’re doomed. My only hope is the “preserve A2 in amber crowd” don’t notice since they haven’t had school age kids in decades.

Whenever I worry about the Ann Arbor community possibly being upset when AAPS starts bulldozing old schools in 2026, I remember that there are currently 300 reactions and 115 comments about a Denny’s being replaced with a Chick-fil-A.

@LenaKauffman Do you have an understanding of how WISD plays into this? I thought WISD operates similar programs and AAPS can or maybe already does use those?

The Career and Technical Education (CTE) Update at tonight's #a2schoolboard meeting is really interesting. They are launching additional training programs in #a2schools, and there's hope we may get a millage passed to help continue funding, as other MI communities have done.

@MichelleWhisks A mess I tried not to get too involved in. I felt maybe a little bit bad for Blick, but given her claims it was racist to fire her because of a not insignificant admin screw up, I think she hurt herself in the very liberal public eye of Ann Arbor. Idk what the AP did.

@SMHred Hi. The AP that worked with Blick is now in my district. Parents are coming forward with concerns. Will try to listen to the meetings around this date. If you remember any info from this time at #A2PS that might be useful could you let me know too? Many thanks.

@LenaKauffman The only thing I know is we can’t get free milk, only free whole lunches that include a milk due to all these regulations. Silly, but also problematic for allergies and other dietary restrictions.

@SMHred This milk issue actually came up before in #a2schoolboard. What goes into the lunches is regulated by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for all states (school lunch is actually a government support for American farmers). It has to meet some nutrition standards...

OMG! An AAPS parent decided to use her town hall question for the state and national reps to complain about sugar in the milk in her kid's elementary school. None of these elected officials have any control over this. Talk to #a2schoolboard

@NYC_essentialSW @legallymom2 My experience with Tamiflu 2 years ago was my older (normally healthy) son got the flu and was sick and miserable for over a week. When my younger (asthmatic, always sick) son got the flu we got him Tamiflu and he was better in 36 hours.

My son has the flu. I’m leaning towards no Tamiflu. Give me the over and under on this antiviral. Am I wrong?

@karenvaites @NYC_essentialSW @educator4ever36 lmao. This is how our school board treats parents, with almost utter contempt. 16 second public commentary. When hundreds of parents wrote in public commentary to reopen schools for in-person learning back in 2021, they completely ignored it and talked about mulch purchases.
Lena Kauffman@LenaKauffman

Public Commentary is now underway with 172 signed up. Each speaker gets just 16 seconds. That is not enough time to speak. #a2schoolboard President Feaster could have chosen to give people 30 seconds, but he is sticking to just 45 minutes total for public commentary.

@NYC_essentialSW @educator4ever36 How many case studies do we have of 90% of parents in a district mobilizing for anything? I have never seen it, anywhere, ever, on any issue. I am all for more parent leverage to improve literacy practice, but we can’t have magical thinking.

@LenaKauffman This is the most asinine way to do public commentary. Like just cut it off at 45 speakers and give each a minute; give priority if it’s a new voice, etc. 16 seconds is nothing. They waste more time shuffling through 100-plus speakers than actually hearing the commentary.

@constantelos @LenaKauffman It boggles my mind too. Especially considering we have the bond for building updates, a source of revenue most other districts don’t, so the vast, majority of the general fund pays for people.

@SMHred @LenaKauffman I don't understand what AAPS is doing so differently from comparable districts that have higher salary and benefits for teachers. Theories: 1) more top heavy admin? 2) greater number of smaller schools? 3) more teachers at the top end of the salary schedule because of seniority?

@LenaKauffman Or I guess increasing enrollment, but people get big mad about SOC, perceived poaching too. Lower birth rates, high A2 housing costs, and loss of students (still not recovered) during COVID all really came home to roost on this debacle.

@LenaKauffman I’d like to know any ideas they have that don’t involve substantial staff cuts or a change in state law on how we fund schools. Without one of those 2 elements, I’m at a loss on how to get teachers raises. It sucks, but that’s the current fiscal reality.

@stephmurrayyyy Also I think we can blame choices society made, even recently around COVID. I think now I probably should have had a 3rd kid. The time to make that decision was 2020-21, when we all know how much support was given to children and their parents, right? 👎

@stephmurrayyyy So tricky. I can think of three lovely couples I know personally who are childless not by choice. Don’t want to punish the childless, but also in just raising my replacement rate 2 children I’ve definitely sacrificed a lot financially where it’s blatantly obvious they did not.

For @thedispatch, I wrote about what I consider the most annoying aspect of birth rate discourse. That is, the pervasive tendency to deny or downplay the real reason declining fertility is an issue: that society needs parents and cannot function without them. A couple points 🧵
