Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming Judith Jacobs, SNV Overall Lead of the #PowerForFoodPartnership, to Rwanda. This visit convened partners & stakeholders to reflect on progress, deepen collaboration, and advance systemic change in Rwanda's agrifood systems.

This 3,400-acre offgrid campus in Rwanda 🇷🇼 was built by 2,500 people from the earth beneath it. Most people think building with earth means small, temporary, or weak. This is a 2-storey, 69-building campus. Built with rammed earth and earth blocks made from soil dug on site, strengthened to last and resist earthquakes. Here is what that looks like: • No artificial lighting during the day • Thick walls that regulate temperature • Mostly naturally ventilated spaces • Runs entirely on solar, producing 1.5MW of power • Wastewater is treated and reused for irrigation But the architecture goes beyond performance. • 90% of the workforce was local • 96% of materials were sourced within Rwanda • 90% of the budget stayed within 500 miles of the site • Stone from local quarries reduced concrete use. • Roofs were built with timber and terracotta tiles fired using agricultural waste. This is not just sustainable design. It is economic design. It is design that works with nature. It is design shaped by people and place. Architecture that builds with people, not just for them. Ever wondered what #P4FP and #RA_PURE really mean? They represent a powerful shift in how we grow food and power our farms. #P4FP, Power for Food Partnership, is an initiative working to transform Rwanda’s agri-food systems by combining two critical forces: 1️⃣Regenerative Agriculture (RA) Farming practices that restore soil health, boost biodiversity, improve water retention, and increase long-term productivity. 2️⃣Productive Use of Renewable Energy (PURE) Using clean energy solutions such as solar and biogas to power irrigation, processing, storage, and value addition across the food value chain. The Permanent Secretary, @CanothMa, held a courtesy meeting with Ms. Eleanor Hartzell, the Country Director of @SNVRwanda. Their discussions focused on potential areas of collaboration to strengthen ongoing infrastructure projects and future initiatives.

Youth Entrepreneurship in Agriculture - Rwanda (YEA-R) is a five-year Mastercard Foundation program that seeks to create 40,000 dignified and fulfilling work opportunities for young people in the agri-food sector in Rwanda by 2029. The program’s goal is to foster inclusive and sustainable economic growth for young people, with a specific focus on young women and young people with disabilities in the horticulture and poultry value chains. The programme is implemented by a consortium of partners led by SNV, which includes HoReCo, Imbaraga, UWEZO, Kvinna till Kivinna, Our Sisters Opportunity, Resonate, and Afro Ark.
