Do you know there is an Orthodox church in Constantinople that remained untouched following the Fall of the City in 1453. A place where the Divine Liturgy persists since the thirteenth century (!) The small unassuming crimson painted church is known as the Panagia Mouchliotissa (Virgin of the Mongols) - Founded by Maria Palaiologina, the illegitimate daughter of Emperor Michael VIII, who spent fifteen years in the Mongol lands, protecting Christianity withing the vast Khanate, before returning to Constantinople (thus the church name). The Panagia Mouchliotissa was saved as it was protected by Mehmed the Conqueror's decree, which remains in effect up to this day. A true gem hidden in the bustle of modern day Istanbul! Must visit.
