SPF Holds an Exchange of Views on Maritime Affairs with Director General Kristi Land On Thursday, May 14, 2026, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation welcomed Director General Kristi Land of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia, along with other senior officials, and held an exchange of views in the field of the law of the sea. The meeting was attended by Senior Fellow Atsuko Kanehara and other experts, who shared perspectives on maritime affairs from an international standpoint.

They exchanged views on the current status and challenges in peace mediation. On May 13, SPF held a public symposium to commemorate the establishment of the Center for Mediation Support, titled “Peace Mediation in an Age of Conflict.” Senior government officials from countries that prioritize peace mediation as a key diplomatic issue, along with NGO practitioners with extensive experience in the field, shared their insights and engaged in lively discussions with participants on the role of dialogue and mediation in today’s conflict‑prone world. On May 12, staff members of the Center for Mediation Support of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, together with senior government officials and practitioners visiting Tokyo at the invitation of the SPF, attended a study session of the Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Caucus. They exchanged views on the current status and challenges in peace mediation. The delegation also participated in a panel discussion titled “The Swiss Approach to Peace Mediation,” organized by the Embassy of Switzerland in Japan in partnership with SPF, and engaged in active discussions with officials, academics, and practitioners in the field.

5月12日、笹川平和財団和平調停センター一行は、海外から招へい中の和平調停関係者とともに、女性・平和・安全保障（WPS）議員連盟の勉強会に参加し、和平調停分野の現状と課題について意見交換しました。また、一行は、駐日スイス大使館が笹川平和財団と連携して開催したパネルディスカッション「The Swiss Approach to Peace Mediation」に参加し、和平調停分野の国内外の有識者らと活発な議論を行いました。

5月12日、スイス連邦外務省のティム・エンダーリン大使は、笹川平和財団との連携により、ロジェ・ドゥバッハ駐日スイス大使主催のパネルディスカッションに登壇しました。スイス連邦工科大学チューリヒ・安全保障研究センター内シンクタンクのダニエル・メックリ博士（@CSS_ETHZurich）、人道対話センターのカティア・パパヤンニ博士（@hdcentre）と共に、笹川平和財団和平調停センター長の堀場明子博士（@SPF_PR）の進行のもと、紛争の予防・解決を成功に導くための鍵となる「公平性」「機密性」「長期的な関与」「協力」を軸とする、スイス流の平和調停への向き合い方について意見を交わしました🇨🇭🇯🇵

The Center for Mediation Support of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation, together with senior government officials and practitioners visiting Tokyo at the invitation of SPF, visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan to exchange views with officials from the International Peace Mediation Unit and to pay courtesy calls on State Minister Mr. Iwao Horii and Director‑General of the Foreign Policy Bureau Mr. Yutaka Arima.

Peace Mediation in an Age of Conflict: Comparative Experiences from Oman, Switzerland, Türkiye, and Private Institutions 📅 May 13, 2026 | 17:30–19:00 (JST) 📍 In-person and online As conflicts continue to escalate around the world, the need for dialogue, trust, and mediation has never been greater. In response, the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (SPF) established the Center for Mediation Support on April 1, 2026, to make a unique Japanese contribution to peace mediation and its support. To explore how states and NGOs support peace processes, SPF will host a public symposium on May 13, 2026, welcoming representatives from Oman, Switzerland, Türkiye, and leading organizations including the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue and Conciliation Resources.
