SPS Traffic Unit

Following heavy snowfall recently, the SPS has received a number of questions about what law applies to transporting insecure cargo, like snow, throughout the city. Sections 40(2) and 40(4) of the Highways and Transportation Act apply directly to the transport of insecure snow. Acceptable methods to secure cargo to be in accordance with this Act include tarps, mesh screens, or straps; depending what type of cargo is being carried. Insecure cargo poses a risk to other motorists as it has the potential to fall onto roadways and lead to further traffic-related incidents like a collision. Drive safe, Saskatoon!

The riding season ended early for this motorcycle operator when an officer spotted them going 143 km/hr in an 80 zone. Along with losing their license for 7 days and bike for 30, the operator was handed a ticket for nearly $1,000. 🏍 🚓

It should go without saying that doubling the speed limit, while on your phone, is a bad idea. Hitting a police motorcycle after doing so? That’s what we would call, a very bad idea.

While their speed might’ve been quick, they still weren’t able to pull a fast one on the Sergeant. After more than $1000 in tickets, the driver left with a court date and without their vehicle.

Today, a vehicle was stopped going 153 km/h in a 90 km/h zone on Circle Drive near Valley Road. Thinking they were sharper than the Sergeant, the driver, whose license was disqualified and suspended, switched places with a passenger in an attempt to avoid the consequence.

Many hands came together in response to an overturned semi unit on a main thoroughfare today, including those of the SK Highway Patrol, Astro Towing, GFL Environmental, SFD, and staff from J&H Builder’s who came out to offer their assistance in the significant clean-up effort.

DYK: taxi and rideshare drivers aren’t exempt from distracted driving laws? This taxi driver should’ve since this wasn’t the first time they’ve been caught distracted behind the wheel. As the second offence, they lost; 🪪 license for 3 days 🚕 taxi for 7 days 💰 $2100

This driver traded in their keys for a $1200 ticket after they were stopped for going 175 km/h in a 90km/h zone on Highway 16 recently. They were also responsible for the fees associated to a 7-day stay in a vehicle impound lot. 🛻 🚓

Choosing to drive impaired puts every road user at risk – yourself included; just “one time” could be your last time. There are several alternatives to impaired driving; make the safe choice.

With so many alternatives to driving impaired, there really is no excuse. Remember, check stops can occur at any time in any place and we’ll be out throughout the holiday season with several enforcement and education initiatives. If you drink, don’t drive; find a safe ride.

This driver was added to the naughty list when they were caught speeding at 218 km/h in a 110 km/h zone. They were handed a $1450 fine as they watched their wheels get winched onto a flat deck trailer. Slow it down so we can all safely enjoy the holidays, #SK.

DYK? Since 2018, federal law enables police to request a sample of a driver's breath whether suspicion of alcohol consumption exists or not. Refusing to provide a breath sample at the roadside can result in Criminal Code charges. If you drink, don't drive; find a safe ride.

What did the Constable say to the cow? It’s time to moove along. Yesterday, an udderly bizarre call for service found officers corralling an escaped cow back into its trailer. Jokes aside, we mean it when we say that policing is never the same day twice.

Within minutes of a concerned citizen reporting this dangerous driving behaviour, ASU locked on and monitored their movements for officers on the ground to intercept. Tickets were issued for speeding, distracted driving, stunting, and disobeying a stop sign, among several others.

The driver of this semi was stopped for going 111km/h in a 90 km/h zone. They also tested positive for THC. Both the semi and driver were removed from the road as a result. 🚫 DYK: there is zero tolerance for drug-impaired driving in SK 🚫

The driver of this vehicle was handed a $580 ticket after they rear-ended another motorist at a red light while distracted by their cell phone. Fortunately, nobody was injured as a result. 📱 Heads up, phones down, #yxe!
