Cole Palmer, Phil Foden and Trent deserved to be dropped. They haven’t been in top form this season and struggle at the national level. However, the inclusion of players like Stones, who hasn’t played much football in a year, ahead of Maguire, who had a rejuvenated season at Man Utd, raises questions about merit.
