My thoughts on the Baxter Holmes piece: First of all, Baxter is as good as it gets, and I trust everything he’s reported here, the piece was great, well sourced and in depth. This is first and foremost a story about a billion dollar family business and all the dysfunction that comes with that — Succession was a documentary as much as it was a TV show. I don’t particularly blame anybody, not Dr. Buss, not Jeanie, for how the family dynamic unraveled, this feels like something that is bound to happen no matter what. The one part of this that I felt the need to push back on was some of the reporting on the relationship with how Jeanie views LeBron. I’m not some crazy LeBron stan, I get frustrated with things about him, the Russell Westbrook trade was a disaster that he shares blame in, but let’s be very clear: LeBron WAS a savior of the franchise, and it doesn’t matter how that makes the Lakers braintrust feel. LeBron did not pull a Kawhi and demand a disastrous Paul George trade to come, LeBron pushed for AD — and just like he should get blame for the Russ trade, he deserves credit for identifying the move that delivered this franchise a championship. To say he signed with a team that was rudderless is an understatement and feels somewhat forgotten — hell, you had Magic Johnson torching the entire organization on national television the same day they announced Frank Vogel as head coach after the team botched their Ty Lue pursuit, and that season ended with a championship, and LeBron James is why. He will always have my appreciation for it. Big picture, I continue to appreciate and respect the legacy of Dr. Buss, and I thank Jeanie Buss for her stewardship and for finding a buyer of the team that we as fans can be excited about — but it is also clearer than ever that it is time to enter a new era.
