@lumiflavor @josiah_awkward oh wait ur right i didn't even realize the first part! as for the second part, i'm pretty sure the amazon and netflix investments are moreso licensing deals to put shows on their platforms. not sure if having private investors negates independent status either

@STOOVRS @josiah_awkward They don't get government grants anymore. Though as you said, government grants do not disqualify you from being indie.
They DO get money from Amazon, Netflix and other undisclosed investors though, which WOULD make their indie credibility questionable.

The thing about indie animation is that it’s INDEPENDENTLY funded. So unless you find a secret hack to make money for animation appear out of thin air that doesn’t involve a mega corporation, you’re just gonna have to suck it up.

@josiah_awkward like, flow is indie. any animated film from NEON or cartoon saloon is technically indie. films like clerks or blair witch are indie. it still means indie because they’re all independent from bigger companies. it just so happens that glitch is more ingrained in the mainstream

@josiah_awkward i’ve seen a few argue that glitch doesn’t count as indie cuz of grants from screen australia. but those ppl tend to forget the whole spectrum of independent filmmaking where directors gotta resort to applying for crucial funding from the govt, most likely just from one state

Maybe that wouldn't have happened if CERTAIN fans weren't openly overreacting to any kind of audiovisual media and trying to cancel it for digging on topics like war, sex or drugs, and then show fanslop films as true masterpieces of animation to finally attack those who disagree.

“Animation Is Cinema” went off track when it went from celebrating all types of animation from everywhere to “Here are the movies that I deem are ACTUALLY cinema and here are the movies that I deem are for babies and were made ONLY for babies”. I couldn’t care less anymore.
