I spoke at the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum at the Harvard Kennedy School Institute of Politics in Boston, where we had a conversation about the future of African cities. Africa’s urban future is already unfolding, and Lagos is right at the centre of it. Our city is growing quickly, and with that growth comes responsibility. We are working deliberately to guide that growth so it creates opportunity and improves everyday life. Through our THEMES+ agenda, we are investing in transportation, technology, tourism, security, and social inclusion. Projects like the Blue and Red rail lines, the strength of our tech ecosystem, and the energy of our young population all show what is possible. I also shared a few numbers that reflect the scale of what is happening in Lagos. Last year, the state generated $821.9 million in internal revenue, which accounted for about 35 percent of Nigeria’s total. In just the third quarter of 2025, Lagos attracted $2.73 billion in capital inflows. Lagos now has more than 2,000 startups and was recently recognised as the world’s fastest-growing tech ecosystem. But beyond the numbers, what matters is the direction we are heading and the partnerships we build along the way. Lagos’ story is closely tied to Africa’s rise. With the right investments and collaboration, we can build a city that works better for everyone.

At the launch of the Centre for African Social and Economic Transformation (CASET) in Bristol, I shared why we need to rethink higher education across the continent. It’s time to make learning more entrepreneurial, practical, and connected to the real world. In Lagos, we’ve seen what’s possible when young people are given the tools to thrive, whether in tech, the arts, or enterprise. CASET represents a powerful new platform to scale this impact across Africa. We recognise the power of partnership as a way of overcoming the challenges we face. Working alongside my team over the last six years, particularly through public-private partnerships, we have delivered transformational infrastructure, including a brand new and expanding metro rail system, the largest rice processing mill in Africa, West Africa’s most modern seaport, and an extensive system of modern transport networks seamlessly integrating road, rail and water. For us in Lagos, ambition and audacity are signature features for all that we do. We seek to build at scale to positively transform the lives and livelihoods of our people. This is why the vision and mission of CASET, to empower people and communities in Africa, resonates deeply with me. As Patron, I’m proud to support this mission. Together with universities, governments, businesses, and global partners, we can build an Africa defined not by its challenges, but by its energy, innovation, and ambition.
