Saint Vincent College Football
This week’s player profile is junior wide receiver, Chris Downs. What is your hometown: Gambrills/Odenton, Maryland. What High School did you attend: Arundel High School. What is your major at Saint Vincent College: Criminology. Why did you choose Saint Vincent College: Saint Vincent sparked my interest because of their association with the Steelers, as I’m a lifelong fan. After coming to campus, it instantly felt like home. It’s a beautiful campus, the academics are great, and sports-wise I felt like it was a place that truly wanted me, which was an important deciding factor. I felt like I could make an impact here, and the players made me feel like part of the team before I even committed. What Position do you play, and what do you love most about it: I play wide receiver, and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love scoring touchdowns. But my true favorite part is beating the corner lined up across from me. Regardless of who it is, I want to embarrass them. What’s your favorite memory from your football career so far: When we beat Hilbert Week 1 and everyone was contributing and playing as a team. Everyone worked together and played for each other. It felt amazing to be a part of. What does it mean to you to be part of the Bearcats football program: It means a lot to be a part of this team. The work that I see guys putting in is unmatched, and the will to be great—not for yourself but for the team—is what separates us from other teams. Everyone wants what’s best for everyone, not just themselves. Especially starting last year, it feels like I could pick any person on the team and know I could rely on them and have that trust. It feels great that I can add to that and give as much as possible to see these guys all succeed. How do you prepare for a game both mentally and physically: I know most guys like to get hyped up before a game, but for me, I like to stay locked in and keep my mind calm. It helps me foresee what I’m going to do on the field, which has led to a lot of my success. It sounds crazy, but I’ve foreseen a lot of my biggest plays happening before they did. It’s about confidence. I also like to drink some Gatorade and eat a small breakfast. Do you have any pregame rituals or superstitions: My pregame ritual would have to be giving myself five minutes of silence away from everyone where it’s just me and my thoughts—kind of like meditation. I’ve done it every game. Also, if my pants don’t feel perfect, I’ll put them back on until they do. Weird superstition, lol. Who has been the biggest influence on your football career: My biggest influence was probably my dad. He helped get me through a lot of things sports-wise growing up. He took me to practices, camps, and training, bought me new gear, gave me pointers constantly, and understands my frustrations. He helps me fix them or get out of my head when I need it. He’s been my biggest supporter (other than my mom) growing up and is always there to see me play—even practices in high school and youth football. I don’t think I would’ve made it this far without his motivation. What are your hobbies or interests outside of football: I play video games a lot. I like to watch movies, watch sports, and go to the gym. What’s your favorite class or professor at Saint Vincent College: All of the criminology professors are amazing and great people. But the ones I’ve had the best time and experience with are Professor Parsley, Mr. Norton, and Dr. Kocian. Those three specifically have made being a crim major much more interesting, rewarding, and fun. If you could play another sport at SVC, what would it be: If I could play another sport, it would be lacrosse. Before college, I played seven years of lacrosse and loved it. I’ve considered doing both, but football is my priority right now. Maybe in the future! #WGF | #GoBearcats | #PlayerProfile
