The hardest part of coaching nineteen years isn't what you'd think. It isn't the losses. It isn't the parents. It isn't the early mornings. It isn't even filling out relay cards AGAIN. It's that the version of you that earned the right to be at the State meet is the same version of you that's afraid to lose at the State meet. You don't get to separate them. The coach who built the program and the coach who's terrified of watching it fall apart are the same person. The work is knowing which one is talking when you open your mouth on Saturday.
