Today, DSP Pension Fund completes 2 years of operations.   AuM 26th December 2023 (Date of Inception): $0 31st December 2024: ~$142M 31st December 2025: ~$842M   Hypothetical conversation between one of our investors and I: Investor: Let’s skip the philosophy. For 2 years, you’ve outperformed the benchmark. But over the last one, you’re 7/10 among peers. Why should I trust a manager who is - at best - mediocre? I: Because the last 9/12 months rewarded passive crowding, not thinking. Investor: I want data (not many investors say so). Why are others doing better now? I: Because most managers manage portfolios very similarly. Over the last 9 months: - Index-heavy funds benefited from narrow leadership - Active managers with low Active Share (~40% average among the pension funds) looked smart We didn’t chase that. Our Active Share is 64%. That guarantees relative discomfort when markets don't reward your active share. Investor: Excuses! Why not adapt? I: Adapt what? One strategy is outperforming this year because it underperformed last year or a couple. We outperformed by a massive margin, and now we are underperforming. You adapt to market conditions, but you don't change principles. That's why they are called principles. I assure you - we may outperform some year again and we will surely underperform after that. Over long time though, our process has a high probability of generating satisfactory results for you. Investor: So you’re saying underperformance is… inevitable? I: 100%. For high Active Share funds like ours, we will underperform - periodically. If an active fund never underperforms, it’s not active. Our 18.86% turnover tells you we didn’t chase what was working yesterday. We positioned for what may compound for years. Investor: Still, why should I stay when peers look better today? I: Because the same argument you are making against us today could've been made in our favor last year, and you would be underperforming. Invest with any fund, and stay very long with that one fund. Switch only if you understand another fund manager better, but avoid chasing past year's returns. They have been generated, and someone else reaped them. You may not get them. Since inception: - Our return: 15.89% - BSE 200 TRI: 12.77% - Expense ratio: 0.09% - Turnover: <19% That performance was generated without style drift, and without raising risk when markets were rising sharply. In a rising market, the risk is flying everywhere, so we are very careful in the businesses we invest in. Our capture ratios reflect that: Upside Capture: 84% (Benchmark rises 10%, we rise 8.40%) Downside Capture: 64% (Benchmark falls 10%, we fall 6.40%) Investor: Capture ratio data are interesting. But, you’re saying that you're okay being 7th today? I: I’d be worried if we were 1st by abandoning our process. Our job isn’t to win every 12-month sprint. Our job is to avoid the marathon-ending mistake. Investor: Ok! So, when will performance turn? I: The moment value/price dispersion returns. The moment markets start rewarding first-principles based judgment. Those moments don’t announce themselves. They arrive quietly, right after most investors lose patience. It’s your pension fund. You are betting on us to not do something stupid while waiting. If that resonates, we're together in the right room. Finally, most of our ideas and views could turn out to be plain wrong. Thanks for investing with us. We are extremely grateful for your trust. --- Factsheet: dsppension.com/nps-factsheet-… Our Investing and portfolio management framework: Equity: dsppension.com/blog/investing… Fixed Income: dsppension.com/blog/investing… Our latest write-up: dsppension.com/blog/investing…
