Allah prohibited gambling (maysir), not every competition with a prize. Allah says: “O you who believe! Intoxicants and gambling (maysir)… are an abomination from Satan’s handiwork, so avoid them.” (Qur’an 5:90–91). Gambling is when both parties stake wealth and the winner takes the loser’s money. Here, participants pay nothing and risk nothing. The organizer simply offers a reward to the winners. The Qur’an itself mentions a unilateral reward in the story of Prophet Yusuf: “Whoever brings it shall have a camel-load (of provisions), and I guarantee it.” (Qur’an 12:72). This is an example of a reward offered by one party, not gambling. The Prophet ﷺ also said: “There is no prize except in camel racing, horse racing, or archery.” (Abu Dawud 2574; al-Tirmidhi 1700). Scholars distinguish between prohibited gambling (qimār), where both parties risk wealth, and a unilateral reward (juʿl), where only one party offers a prize. So my question is: who is risking their money here? If participants lose nothing when they’re wrong, how can this be considered gambling?
