@sesi_the_man This model of locally built, verifiable, and open hardware may represent the most resilient and secure way to store Bitcoin. 3/3

@sesi_the_man By now, the global reach of SeedSigner, the number of people and places where it’s being independently assembled, is likely beyond what any traditional HWW company could have imagined. 2/3

Over time it has been interesting to see and hear about the various ways SeedSigner has reached different parts of the world where the commercial wallet industry has difficulty doing so. There are the obvious safety and privacy concerns in places like Iran and China, but it's difficult to get HWWs in Russia b/c most of the manufacturers are domiciled in countries that are aligned with Ukraine and import/export restrictions come into play b/c of the war. There's also the protectionist import regulations in South Korea intended to give Samsung an edge in the electronics marketplace there, making it more challenging/expensive for manufacturers and resellers to import HWWs in quantity. I'm currently hearing from frustrated resellers and consumers in different parts of the world who are seeing customs agents routinely open HWWs and request further info on them as a part of the import clearance process. And with the current conflict in the Middle East, I'm sure some are turning to SeedSigner there as well. The larger model of taking commodity parts that are unassociated with bitcoin, and cottage-scale operators building them locally into secure signers, seems to have more advantages than I originally anticipated -- decentralization in bitcoin cold storage FTW! (And it only gets better when we're finished developing microcontroller support.)

@SeedSigner I have great respect for the designers of HWWs and the businesspeople in this industry. At the same time, I believe they take significant risks in many ways. Satoshi showed us a smarter path. The DIY community is simply following in his footsteps and striving to improve safety.

Some perspective and nuance on our thing and why it’s been a “project” and not a “product”.
Seed@sesi_the_man

Had an interesting conversation with the designer for one of the largest HWWs in the bitcoin industry yesterday, he was having trouble wrapping his mind around why we give everything away. The short answer is that when you try to build a profitable business, you almost inevitably have to create a competitive moat by holding back some of the best stuff, and we just don’t want to do that. As a free, permissionless, open source network I think bitcoin deserves a free, permissionless, open source savings tool too. I also think the obligations and expenses of full time employees, supply contracts, leases, taxes, advertising commitments, etc. etc. can end up corrupting incentives over time and can lead to selling customer data, trying to squeeze them for every penny that you can via over-marketing, and even supporting shitcoins, etc. etc. We just don’t want to become what we’re disrupting and I’m blessed to be in a position financially to take the approach we have. But another really cool thing about SeedSigner is that we can be a sponge for talent that the bitcoin space would otherwise have no access to. Some of our lead contributors have high paying fiat jobs that they have zero plans to leave, but they are wonderful bitcoiners who want to use their skills to contribute to the bitcoin ecosystem. Our project provides an outlet for their talent that would otherwise never make it into bitcoin. Do I love “working for free”? Nope. There are moments that are super gratifying and I see the impact that the project has had literally around the world, and I’m proud of that. But would I love an OG to see what we’ve done and flip a few bitcoin our way? Yes, LoL, yes I would. But for now I just awkwardly plod forward because there’s not an easy answer. Anyhow, just some thoughts.

@SeedSigner This is just the beginning. Quietly, behind the scenes, hundreds of Bitcoiners around the world are building their SeedSigners and stacking sats. The current geopolitical climate has shown people the importance of having truly independent ways to access their seeds.

@JMoody21M @SeedSigner 💯% The major HWW makers count on plebs not knowing that it is not essential or necessary to have the private keys stored in a so-called "Secure Element" in the HWW, the SE just makes the device more of an attack surface than a Seedsigner. Folks, you only need a signing device!

Have to give @BTCsessions much deserved credit for drawing a crowd and driving foot traffic through the FOSS area at the Vegas conference — solid, actionable information presented in a clear, accessible way.

DM from a user. Once you get it, you get it. “I think SeedSigner’s model is the most resilient against government attacks. Hardware wallet companies are an easier target and offer a better return on investment than attacking the entire supply chain of the Raspberry Pi Zero.”

Whoever Satoshi is, I sometimes wonder what happened to the machine that mined those early blocks. Was it destroyed…or is it still sitting somewhere in storage, completely forgotten?

I'll have a table in the FOSS area at the Vegas conference next week (which I appreciate BTC Inc. for providing) where I will be providing demos and cold storage education, as well as selling some SeedSigner-related gear. Come by and say hi. 🧡

We just added a deep dive into @SeedSigner to the Bitcoin Design Guide. It explores how they transformed a hobbyist text-based interface into a modern, user-friendly signing device while staying true to its stateless, DIY philosophy. bitcoin.design/guide/case-stu…

Even if @SeedSigner isn't in your quorum, it's still a great idea to have one around just in case something goes wrong -- bricked HWW, multisig bug, etc. etc. Knowing you still have access to your funds eliminates a lot of stress in that kind of situation.
Liam ₿all@modernonmaui

Seedsigner just got me out of a funky multisig hiccup where another hardware wallet would not sign a transaction due to some bug. I really needed to sign the transaction so boom. Worked instantly. Warned me that it did not have the configuration file as it should but let me sign anyway.

Make sure you're following @KeithMukai and @odudex -- there's a quiet revolution in DIY cold storage happening that will simplify the process to set up your own signer, make security assurances and overall UX even better, and continue to keep costs very, very low.

Build your own SeedSigner from parts and you will avoid so, so many of these kinds of attacks. You'll also actually understand how your cold storage setup works and feel comfortable recovering your funds from key material if you ever need to.
Seed@sesi_the_man

This arrived recently, at my home. Ironic that so many of the people who profess cYpHeRpUnK values and scream the loudest that "trusted third parties are security holes" are the same people who invest in and promote the companies that make these kinds of attacks possible.
