Where did the love like this go? How did it all become about sex, how did bodies become utilitarian, and hearts "fair game". How did we get from wanting our first kiss to silent, awkward goodbyes after "hook ups"—when drunken passion fades to sobriety, desire clears to reveal shuffled reclothing, tissues, shame, booking of cabs, uncertainty. When did hand holding become the first act in a practised process, and not the highlight of a week? When did sex become so accessible that it entirely lost its meaning? When did we become placeholder—replacing desire with horniness. My body with hers, hers with hers, hers with hers.... When did bodies become instruments from homes, and hands become so exacting? Where is the blushing, the flowers, the smiling, the texting, the joy, the surrender; the filling every moment with the other, not for sex, not for marriage, but because. Because their very being makes you a believer. Why are we all so broken, jaded, cynical, suspicious, guarded, alone, and preparing to "brave through our 30s without a partner"? Why is "single and thriving" the norm now, and not "warm and loved"? Why are more people lonelier than ever, wanting and yet untrusting? Why has every one of my female friends called me atleast once, and cried—about there being no hope any more? Why are even the rom-coms of our late 20s about women becoming "independent" and adopting cats, instead of continuing to date? This was how it was supposed to be. This wasn't how we were supposed to be. Is it RIP Love, circa 2024.
