With Yukari being a new character, Suki has the chance to get that same mooring. When more is revealed about/through Yukari, we'll learn about Kyoshi/Rangi's establishing of Kyoshi Island and its culture. We'll learn more about Suki's lineage/connection to the island. MOAR LORE!

When you read the novels, you see Toph is further solidified through her being an heir to the Beifong dynasty. Her rebelliousness is contrasted against the insane amount of wealth/business her family is in charge of. And their run-ins with the Avatar. That's legacy.

Think about Toph Beifong as being part of the gaang. Bryke could have easily just added a random earthbending prodigy with no backstory to the gaang to be Aang's teacher, but instead they rooted her into the story. They gave her a past and a family--and that's BIG!

Suki was originally a one-off character who was brought back due to massive fan love. Yukari's existence in the remake gives Suki more credibility as someone who exists in the world. She has a home, a family, a lineage, as opposed to being a singular free-agent type.

Tamlyn Tomita as Suki's mother (Yukari) was a GREAT addition to the live-action Avatar remake. Yukari grounds Suki into the Avatar canon more by giving her an anchor point, as opposed to just being a random leaf in the wind as she was in the original. Also her performance was +++

But maybe I'm just an old boomer for whom nothing will ever match up to the original. Again, I don't HATE the Netflix remake; I'll likely have to watch it again. Though I'm ECSTATIC about the amount of Azula attention seamlessly woven into season 1. Chef's kiss

I guess I'm trying to figure out WHO this was for. It's one thing to remix/retell a story, but the choices leave me a bit confused. (I'm sure I'm being generous.) It feels like it's coming from a place of appreciation for the world, but idk what it's aspiring to.

The Netflix Avatar series told a different story than Nickelodeon's--that, I can forgive. In fact, I expect it and am glad! But to deviate so far as to break the lore of the world? It might be fiction but it makes no sense. I am in favor of not letting it into the canon.

@bad_dominicana I think they did that about Spanish flu in 1918.. just straight up ignored it in media after the fact. like, mad people didn't even know that we had an entire nationwide pandemic 100 years before COVID. In 2120, it'll be the same thing I imagine

#TheBalladofSongbirdsandSnakes is coming out shortly (are y'all using a shorter HT cos 😱) and I feel like the film has the chance to hold a mirror up to society and how we use children as political pawns and do not really care about them as we pretend to.

If more people saw babies/children as complex human beings, they'd be hesitant to give birth all willy-nilly too. If not hesitant, at least thoughtful.
