This SG2 playtest feels like we're going back to a game about gunplay and portals. Here's some of my thoughts and opinions on what I've seen: My stance on factions is pretty neutral, but the abilities they had were simply not it. I think they could keep factions, but change the abilities to be portal-related (porta-portal, nade to shut portal walls off, etc). I'm not 100% in favor of the removal of factions, but it does feel great to have a meta centered around positioning and portal-play again instead of stacking abilities. I hear the argument of "they turned chess into checkers" with this playtest, but I'd argue that chess is all about positioning and strategy in your movements, not using hacks to see your opponent's next move or using a shield to deny a poor move on your part. If anything, we're closer to chess with positioning being significantly more important now. I also hear the argument of "they should have just fleshed out the factions more and added more factions to counter other abilities". Tbh, that's just not what Splitgate was ever about. Expanding the faction roster so they all have abilities to counter each other just brings us closer to a cluttered hero shooter and further away from what truly made Splitgate so special to so many people: portal play. The feeling of outsmarting an opponent with creative portal play will ALWAYS feel significantly more rewarding than getting a kill on someone you can see through the wall, or winning a fight you should have lost by popping a shield. Creative and strategic portal plays are what truly fuel Splitgate's dopamine farm, not ults/abilities that give cheap kills. That said, this brings us back to one of SG1's issues, where infinite triple-portaling quickly became a meta in pubs and drove away many inexperienced players. While I'm a zippy portal guy myself, I think introducing the limited portal system from the BR into Arena may be worth a try - keep the game focused on gunplay and portals, but make players use portals strategically instead of it being a spammy movement mechanic. I've heard talk of EMPs coming back and I'm all for that as well. In SG1, holding a site often relied on blocking off portal walls with your own portals to prevent enemies from portaling over. For the enemy to portal over, they'd have to first use their EMP nades to clear your portals and make room for their own on the wall. SG2's removal of this sped the pace up by allowing enemies to simply overwrite your portals. This makes holding a site very difficult, and it's clear why new map control elements like the smart wall came into the picture. I am 100% for returning map control elements back to the portal and EMP mechanics. As for loadouts, I have mixed feelings. I think with all the new weapons in this game, along with perks and equipment, loadouts make sense. At the same time, I do miss the true arena feel where everyone has an equal start and grabs weapons around the map. Maybe they could bring back blue/purple weapon spawns, but they give you an smg or shotgun that you pre-select at the menu. Maybe the loadouts have you select perks and equipment, and then the weapon selections are for what appear in your weapon pickups (you could select 1 smg, 1 shotgun, 1 battle rifle, etc). These are just my thoughts so far. Overall, it feels like we're going in the right direction and I'm excited for what's next :) TLDR: Good step forward. Keep focusing portal play as that's the main dopamine driver that everyone fell in love with before. Factions could stay if abilities center around portals. Portal blocking and EMPs are better than smart walls for map control. The current playtest put triple portaling back to the meta for pubs - experiment with limited portaling to make it more strategic and less spammy. Loadouts could affect weapon pickups on the maps instead of your starting loadout, bringing back that true arena feel.
