This is one of those generalizations outsiders make on the inside group without seeing if it is actually the case. It's not, by the way. Americans, and more importantly the system in general, is just so highly individualistic that an attack on one is an attack and all. I know that sounds counter-intuitive, but I assure you it isn't. I value my individualism. In order for me to maintain that individualism, I must protect the framework that protects it. That framework, likewise, protects millionaires. So what you get is Americans defending the framework behind the millionaire and themselves while the outsiders only see them defending the millionaire.

The rich can avoid this with a very simple trick. Stay in NYC and live there full time.
