@JamesAFurey If anything like Britain: disheartening school culture (results driven), and poor discipline so too much disruption- frequently coupled with parents who have to work too many hours to encourage learning effectively. That was my experience as a British school teacher.

I taught my 4 year old son to read with a book that cost less than $20. I probably could have done it for free if I wasn't so lazy. So why, with *billions* of dollars spent on literacy initiatives in America, can't half the country read proficiently?

@jeremycorbyn Correct. This is precisely the problems league tables have caused for schools. If anyone was listening we wouldn’t make the same mistake with hospitals.

Hospital league tables are a disastrous idea. You do not improve standards by shaming hard-working NHS staff, damaging morale and adding unnecessary stress. We should support - not scapegoat - our medics. That means giving them the resources they need to provide care for all.

@rebeccabutlerm2 @jeremycorbyn Those who served and fell were victims of violence. Most didn’t choose it; they were sent over the top at gunpoint to settle an argument they didn’t start. I think that’s where he’s going with this.

On Remembrance Sunday, we commemorate all those who have been killed in war. The darkness of war is not a distant past, but an ever-present reality. Today, let us honour the victims of violence by striving to build a more peaceful world for everyone, everywhere.

@SteB777 @GeorgeMonbiot In brief, there was a lot of ‘Trump is misunderstood’ and some of the obligatory ‘George is alarmist.’ Calling George a catastrophist seems to be par for the course whenever he’s on; it’s personal and it’s gaslighting. I don’t know how he puts up with it.

@GeorgeMonbiot They let you on the telly again. I have a feeling I'd need a TV licence to watch it. And I won't buy one, on the grounds I refuse to pay to be gaslighted.

@GeorgeMonbiot I don’t find it a compelling argument. I care very much about humanitarian issues but Earth’s systems are more important and are undeniably better off with fewer of us. That’s the bottom line for me.

@terrychristian Pleased to say I haven’t spoken to anyone here in the UK who is remotes celebrating a Trump win. I evidently move in the right circles.

Weird all the people in the UK celebrating Trump's win. His USA first economic policy means trade tariffs . This will badly affect UK economy - ironically enough because we are outside the protections of the EU. Once more they wave the flag to celebrate something that makes them poorer

@BrianMendler I know them well. Basically, they're acquiescent, and they coddle and goad young people so they never learn natural consequences. They're survival techniques. Themselves and other adults end up walking on eggshells because the kids understand they're in charge.

@BenGoldsmith They can afford to show more moral integrity. Frankly, the freedom they have to show moral integrity is the only reasonable argument I can see for keeping them. They need to address the incongruities between their sources of finance, and the causes they claim to patronise.

Like many people in Britain, members of the Royal family own stuff; often they rent that stuff out on commercial terms to third parties, including to public sector ones like the NHS and state schools; they pay full tax on the income these activities bring them. Watching segments of the media using this non-story in an attempt to whip up envy and anger towards the Royals, who of course cannot defend themselves, is enough to make you start believing @elonmusk when he derides the sheer inadequacy and the not-so-hidden agenda of much of the ‘legacy media’.

Has anyone seen the sun lately? Here in North Shropshire, it's barely been seen at all for the last 10 days, and it doesn't look like it's going to put in another appearance any time soon.

@JohnRMetzner @Megatron_ron Not quite. Those of us who voted honestly, with integrity, for a smaller party knew our votes wouldn’t count. Many people voted tactically for Starmer to rid us of the Tories. I knew that was a mistake, but I understand why they did.
