Among the towns and villages along the Nith is the small village of New-Abbey. The village was recently featured in the local press for their community spirit. With a community a “swap box”, or the local store delivering supplies to those in need, community is key in New Abbey 🤝

On the way out to the coast, we pass by Sweetheart Abbey- so named because the patron who funded its construction, Lady Devorgilla, is buried here with the embalmed heart of her husband which she kept long after his death 💀 💓

If we get into bother on our journey along the river, Nith Inshore Rescue are nearby! After a tragic death near Glencaple, local people decided the village needed its own rescue boat; So Nith Inshore Rescue was born! To learn more or to donate click here: bit.ly/3csQXmc

With 1400 acres of wetland teeming with wildlife, the wetlands centre at Caerlaverock is an important place for the species that live by the river. Swallows gathering; wildflower meadows full of bees, butterflies and dragonflies; the occasional osprey- all great reasons to visit
