The British Horseracing Authority announced that the number of fatal injuries in 2019 at ‘0.2 per cent’, or ‘179 fatalities’ had increased to ‘0.24 per cent’ in 2021, with 216 deaths, which totalled more than 1 horse dying on the tracks every other day (British Horseracing Authority). Nick Luck claimed that 99.8% of the 90,000* runners that race each year in Britain were safe after racing, but this leaves around 180 that die due to injury, or about 1 every 2.0277 days. These figures don’t include the horses that are sent to slaughter after they are retired, or the horses that die in training.
