He's very much like a Joey from Yugioh in this regard, Yugi and Kaiba had a connection to duel monsters due to fate and just had a generally more relevance to the story compared to him, but he reached greater heights anyways

Bruce having a ex boyfriend he tagged along with on his world sojourn who is a sociopath who fights crime exclusively because it’s more challenging and fun than committing crimes and him and Bruce have this uneasy truce is fun.

@SamCharizardGuy It does feel like after a point Ash's teams were built to be a few really cool Pokemon and not big handfuls of rag-tag weirdos.
Like, even Alola was a mythical, a UB, two starters (even if neither fully evolved), and Lycanroc's unique form.
