Exciting to announce that the second edition of the PCGML textbook by Sam Snodgrass, Adam Summerville and myself is online! This version is a major update of the first, with a new chapter on GenAI and updates on the last two years of research.

Be sure to chat with @sebastianberns about this super cool work if you're at CHI this week! Had a lot of fun with this team looking into how human perceptions align (or don't) with common similarity measures used in PCG and other domains.

This week, I am at #CHI2024 to present our latest paper. “Not All the Same: Understanding and Informing Similarity Estimation in Tile-Based Video Games” arxiv.org/abs/2402.18728. Co-authors: @CIGbalance, Laurissa Tokarchuk, @SamPSnodgrass and @creativeEndvs.

@sgware There’s always opengameart.org and kenney.nl/assets! I’m thinking the same thing for various Unity uses. I kind of had hoped Unity as a company would just have collapsed already.

@JoINrbs I think there are a number of AI researchers who'd be happy to test this empirically (myself included)

New paper on Procedural Content Generation via Knowledge Transformation (PCG-KT) from @riffsircar, me, @SamPSnodgrass, @Autumnsburg, Tiago Machado, and @gillianmsmith. We propose a framework for transforming knowledge between domains, allowing for generation for unseen games!

Reminder that *today* is the last day to submit to the @ieee_cog call for Competitions.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone sends in!

From subtweet to published book in ~2 years? That's not a bad turnaround. A PCGML textbook now exists! I had a great time writing this with @MatthewGuz and @Autumnsburg And I'm really hoping this book helps bring more people into the field!

I’ve had to explain to a few students recently that there isn’t a PCGML textbook because the topic only coalesced ~4 years ago. But if any academic publishers want to pay @Autumnsburg, @SamPSnodgrass, and I to write a textbook I certainly wouldn’t say no.

@GalaxyKate Life lessons with Uramichi Oniisan is solid comedy about a 30ish year old who works on a kids television show and is just generally struggling with his life.

Well, well, well. Look who got a title bump. I'll still be bringing PCGML to game devs, and exploring new ways that PCGML can impact game design, and improve bots and testing. Now with some seniority sprinkled in! Looking forward to growing alongside @modl_ai in my new role

Last month we tried our first Twitter spaces and we are ready for round2 with @holmgard @risi1979 and @AIandGames
Listen to the experts argue about behavioural learning and it’s implication for Player bots in Video games.

@D_M_Gregory @mtrc A while back I also worked on level gen conditioned on path info (cig2017.com/wp-content/upl…, aaai.org/ocs/index.php/…) We trained a Markov chain-based model on level details+paths then used paths as a condition while generating. @MatthewGuz's work compares against this approach too
English

@mtrc Say, may I pick your brain on the approach I'm experimenting with?
So far I plan a player motion path — currently with a Markov Chain — then generate tiles around that path to support it.
Might you know of any papers/other works that do something similar, that I could research?

@sysnet_ai Personally, I'm hoping for a Fast X, which they use for a major crossover event to finally bridge the DCU (Diesel cinematic universe). Show me Dom racing Riddick in spaceship you cowards!
