@SamProgramiz @Zhuinden For sure Maven would have been preferred by the (Java) devs, but it didn't fit the technical requirements, as its rigidity can't handle build-type × flavor variant matrix nicely. Ant was too loose, Maven too rigid, Gradle sat in the middle 🤷‍♂️

Unpopular opinion: #Gradle was the wrong foundation for #Android Platform toolchains want declarative + hermetic + cacheable. Gradle is imperative + dynamic + Turing-complete. Ten years of AGP breaking changes are just Google retrofitting Bazel's properties onto the ... ⬇️

@ASalvadorini Well, they did originally launch with ANT, and it was replaced with Gradle after. There was an option to switch to Maven, but apparently Gradle was the new hot thing at the time. Typeless! Groovy! To be fair, I don't think anyone expected 9 Gradle major versions in 9 years. 🤔
