It's been one working week since I publicly launched @MelbourneSnap. Not really sure what 'good' is to me at this point, but it's growing steadily and crucially already Aussie subs vastly outnumber the supportive friend/family subs from the UK. I'll take that. #Melbourne

@MichaelMacLeod1 Interesting indeed. Would partly explain this place (X) and how it seems to be a competition for who can come up with the most deranged theories and go viral with them....sorry, I mean it's a marketplace of ideas and the world's town hall 🤨

Wonder how batshit crazy X can go? I see some of the worst on here (the American influencers) have started turning on their own in a battle to see who can come up with the wildest theories

@ryan_c414 @JournoStephen The fact they travel doesn't say much. It's if they stay that is the clincher. Many young Australians go to London and use it as a base to travel Europe. Plus loads have very strong family links here.

@JournoStephen In addition the high number of Australians immigrating to the UK (London in particular) makes me wonder why so many of them choose to come here still.

The UK is a dying country where under-40s function as human ATMs without withdrawal limits. That’s why 2023 saw a ten-year high for net migration to Australia. If you’re young, talented and want to make something of yourself, there’s no future for you in the UK.

I have very few friends working full time who aren’t having to subsidise their income with a second job. Most people I know spend >50% of their take home pay on rent. We wonder why hospitality is on its knees. Landlords have all our money !

So while the grass is literally greener in the UK I think if you can land in Australia with some support (my wife is from here) you will end up better off once you find your feet. But finding your feet can take a long time and be expensive.

There needs to be better leadership. I'm not sure what the answer is but if there aren't incentives and support for families, people will keep putting off having children because it's too expensive. The tax burden on the young will increase, they'll keep leaving.

I don't deny the UK's problems. They are real and consequential. Weirdly now I've left I feel more defensive about the UK (particularly Scotland) than I did when I was there. The culture, the people, the cities, the quick access to nature (Aussie cities are huge).

A lot of Brits come here and expect to fall into a job earning twice as much as they got at home. Rarely happens. Many struggle. But if you're in the right career path: engineer, nurse, doctor or anything on the skills shortage list that's when you could have a big life upgrade.

I read this a lot. As a Scot who emigrated in October I would say life in Australia is better than UK..but the weather accounts for much of that IMO. Since 2019, Australians have experienced the sharpest decline in living standards across the OECD. Stay with me...

@MichaelMacLeod1 In their defence, who doesn't have falling circulation? I can't speak for them anymore but I imagine they might ask to be judged on digital audience size, digital revenues and digital subs Not many (if any) editors have targets to up circ. Usually it's to manage decline.

@DavidSHolz It's all relative though. As a dad I compare my life to my parents and maybe at a push my grandparents but certainly nothing further back. Rightly or wrongly we expect progress. We live in an age of options (especially for women). Our ancestors didn't have options.

i find it so strange when people say they can't afford kids. your ancestors were able to afford kids for the last 300,000 years! are we *really* less wealthy now? you might think your parents were better off, but how about further back? they still went on.

I was today years old when I learned Hammond in Jurassic Park (played by Richard Attenborough) is Scottish. Never noticed before. Accent is bad and inconsistent so that's probably why.
