I agree, the word itself predates social media, and assumes physical proximity, shared experiences, and usually only exists within the context of a wider community bond (although not always but it helps to have similar cultural touchstones in common) A better term would be something like “pen pal” for internet friends. But saying something like that sounds degrading to people who have forged some level of kinship over years of an internet relationship. Like I consider you and me “friends” right? But only because saying “internet friends” feels like it is dismissive or somehow means that the relationship doesn’t matter to me. So idk, I think the issue is that people who have a significant portion of their life spent on the internet have substituted the real deal for what can only lead to a parasocial relationship

Depends on the context. Like if you're just a fan and reaching out, that's sorta parasocial— And if its your first contact with someone, especially on the internet, there's no basis to be friends. I consider friends people I know and trust, you don't really know folks on the internet/it takes more time to build a friendship— build being the operative word because in my experience, friendships are usually built rather than asked for. And if you *ask* someone flat out that you don't really know if you can be friends, you sometimes have put them in a sorta awkward position where they say some variation of "no," and then any possibility of future friendship is kinda muddied on both ends too. idk honestly it's just kind complicated. I don't think either of the above ways are a good way to build friends online. Internet friendships are hard.

Genuine question as an autist—why is it not okay to make friends the first way? I specifically ask because one too many times I was SURE I was friends with someone and they pulled the "we never were friends" card, so I'm not sure I'm super clear on what a friend actually is
