@richdavisphd @AUSSOCMIC @10minus6cosm Are there studies that compare growth yield in SBA/CHOC vs BCYE? At the lab I work, we don't have BCYE or 30C incubators. MCM says those would be "optimal" but I'd like to have a better sense of what yield is lost with "suboptimal" conditions.

@AUSSOCMIC @10minus6cosm We see Nocardia growing on routine blood agars (this gram stain came from a sheep blood; see also this picture, Nocardias on SBA and chocolate agar: twitter.com/richdavisphd/s…) But if we're specifically trying to grow Nocardia, we use Buffered Charcoal Yeast Extract (BCYE) plates.

#MicroRounds Day 314: Nocardia. Beaded-branching, partial acid fast, gram positive rods, Nocardia spp. can have very different colony appearance. these are three isolates sent for molecular ID. Bright white, coral/orange, and off-white colony colors. #ASMClinMicro

@Conortmccartne1 @ABsteward @CIDJournal Happy to do a grand rounds for you if you can arrange it. As those who have witnessed the spectacle of that oral vs. IV abx talk can attest, people will be talking about it (and my entertaining but likely alarming dementia) for a long time after! Could help change some minds.

Bactrim is fine for most beta-hemolytic strep, folks. Many of us were taught this one incorrectly because thymidine content in agar unregulated until 2006 so looked resistant in old studies. Appreciate @SDoernberg clearing this one up in 2nd myth busters talk. #IDWeek2022

@ABsteward Even the most conservative interpretation of the literature cannot support this.

I don't necessarily agree with all the authors recommendation "A minimum 6 weeks of IV antibiotics therapy is recommended when deep-seated infection, incld endocarditis or osteomyelitis is present" I don't believe there's an evidence for minimum IV "lead in" First (-) culture?!
