A few months ago, I asked myself a question that completely changed how I see university. “If I graduated today, what exactly would I be bringing to the table besides my degree?” That question stayed with me. Like many students, I grew up believing that the path was simple: study hard, earn good grades, graduate, and the opportunities would come. But the more I learned about technology, AI, software development, and the future of work, the more I realized the world had changed. Today, employers aren’t only asking, “What did you study?” They’re asking: • What problems can you solve? • What skills have you built? • Can you adapt? • Can you create value? That realization changed my mindset. I stopped seeing university as the only place to learn. I started investing more time in building skills, taking on leadership responsibilities, writing consistently, learning about emerging technologies, and connecting with people beyond my classroom. Not because my degree isn’t important. It is. But I’ve come to see it as a foundation, not the destination. As African students, we’re entering a world where geography matters less than the value we can create. A student in Lagos, Nsukka, Nairobi, or Accra can learn from world-class resources, collaborate with international teams, and build a career that reaches far beyond their location. That opportunity is exciting, but it also comes with responsibility. We can’t afford to graduate with only a certificate. We should aim to graduate with skills, experience, a strong network, and a mindset of continuous learning. One lesson has stayed with me throughout this journey: A degree opens the first door. What you build after earning it determines how many more doors will open. Aside from being a content writer who spends most of his time writing content around blockchain and emerging technologies, I'm also a web developer. Most of my experience is on the front-end side, though I also have a basic understanding of backend development side. Recently, I decided to dedicate some time to building my own portfolio website, and It has been deployed, but it's been an experience stepping back into development mode, building, refining, and continuously updating different sections as I learn and improve. For me, writing and development go hand in hand. Writing helps me communicate ideas clearly, while development allows me to turn those ideas into something people can interact with. Whether it's creating content that explains blockchain products or building web experiences from scratch, I'm always looking for ways to grow and improve my skills. It's a journey, and I'm enjoying every part of it.
