'The Silent Scream' is one of the most influential films about abortion. Made in 1984, the film continues to change hearts and minds against abortion decades on. The film, narrated by former abortionist Bernard Nathanson, showed ultrasound footage of a 12-week abortion. At the time, this kind of imagery was unfamiliar to the general public. Viewers could see the baby's movements, in turn, this shifted perception from a medical procedure to something more personal and visual. The film demonstrates how the baby feels pain, for many viewers it introduced the idea that abortion involves suffering, which wasn’t widely discussed in public discourse at the time. The Silent Scream changed minds because it changed how people felt about abortion, making the issue visual, immediate, and emotionally charged in a way that hadn’t been widely experienced before. Bernard Nathanson performed and overseen many abortions earlier in his career. He later became a leading pro-life advocate and a voice for the unborn child.
