History unearthed: A group of volunteers in Poland uncovered this Star of David armband in the attic of a bunker used by the Będzin Ghetto resistance fighters. After the Nazis occupied Poland, they opened the ghetto in Będzin and forced over 30,000 Jews to live there in cramped, unsanitary conditions. Of those 30,000, only 2,000 survived. The rest were sent to extermination camps and murdered, mostly in the gas chambers. During the Holocaust, Polish Jews were forced to wear armbands like these to mark them as Jewish. This armband might never have been found, if Karolina and Pioter Jakobenkoa and the nonprofit they lead in Poland hadn't purchased the building and preserved it. Now, teams of Polish volunteers have transformed the historic building into an educational center for visiting students. They are still uncovering artifacts. Today, many people do not know the history of the Holocaust. Others deny it even happened. But the evidence is still there, in the attics of Poland, and in the memories of those who survived.
