#SantaAnaPD #TrafficThursday 🚲 The Santa Ana Police Department is reminding motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians to share the road responsibly during National Bicycle Safety Month this May. From children riding to school to adults commuting to work or staying active, bicycling remains an important and popular form of transportation and recreation throughout California. With increased bicycle traffic on local roadways, the Santa Ana Police Department is encouraging everyone to remain alert and practice safe roadway behaviors to help prevent serious injuries and fatalities. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 1,166 bicyclists were killed in traffic crashes on U.S. roads in 2023, with an estimated 49,489 bicyclists injured nationwide. In California alone, 145 bicyclists lost their lives in motor vehicle-related crashes during the same year. Throughout the month of May, the Santa Ana Police Department will conduct focused traffic safety enforcement operations targeting violations and unsafe driving behaviors that place bicyclists and pedestrians at risk. These violations include speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield the right-of-way, and stop sign or red-light violations. The Santa Ana Police Department remains committed to improving roadway safety for everyone who uses our streets. Funding for this program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
