WILDFIRE ALERT - SAN JUAN WILDFIRE Fire crews are actively responding to a wildfire located in the Jemez Ranger District, northeast of the Cerro del Pino Mountains. The San Juan Wildfire is approximately 8 acres and is being fully suppressed by fire resources on the ground. Currently, the fire poses no risk to people or property and is 80% contained. Firefighters on scene have reported a downed power line but the cause is under investigation. No further updates will be provided unless fire behavior significantly changes. With recent drying due to higher than average temperatures and lack of snowmelt, fire danger is expected to increase on the forest this week and moving forward.

SANTA FE NATIONAL FOREST PLANS BLANCO PRESCRIBED FIRE The Santa Fe National Forest is planning prescribed fire operations in the Española Ranger District as early as February 23, 2026, pending all required approvals. The Blanco prescribed fire is a 750-acre broadcast burn located off Forest Road 144 west of Clara Peak and north of Santa Clara Pueblo. Fire managers will look for opportunities to implement this burn from February 18 to March 15, as weather conditions allow. A broadcast burn is when fire is applied across a defined area or boundary to reduce overgrown vegetation to help protect local communities, infrastructure and natural resources from wildfires. This is a maintenance burn, which refers to a low to moderate intensity prescribed fire conducted to keep surface fuels reduced and continue to build a fire resilient ecosystem. Fire managers will use hand and aerial ignitions, including a drone (UAS), over 4 days as weather conditions allow. The project area will be broken into smaller units to allow fire managers to burn smaller sections at a time. During the burn, a drone with infrared heat-detection capability will detect pockets of heat near containment lines, both during and after ignitions. Smoke will be visible from Española, Los Alamos, and Santa Fe and surrounding communities off U.S. Route 84 including Chili, Hernandez, and Abiquiu. We will evaluate weather conditions in the hours before a burn begins. If conditions warrant, scheduled prescribed fire activities may be canceled. Planning will continue through 2026 and includes site visits, evaluating roadway options, and community collaboration. Public input is a key part of this process before any design or construction decisions are made. Community members will have an opportunity to provide input on broader outdoor recreation needs in Gallinas Canyon at a public event hosted by the SFNF and Las Vegas Community Foundation. 🔴Event Information Date: Friday, February 27, 2026 Time: 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. (food provided) Location: Cafe Colibri, Las Vegas, N.M. PRESCRIBED PILE BURN UPDATE Fire crews took advantage of snowy conditions over the weekend to conduct pile burns in the Cuba, Jemez, and Española Ranger Districts. In the Cuba Ranger District, crews successfully treated 203 acres on the American Park/Rock Creek piles. In the Jemez Ranger District, 17 acres were treated on the San Diego Egress unit. In the Española Ranger District, crews completed 50 acres in the Tesuque pile burn unit. Santa Fe National Forest fire managers will continue hazardous fuels reduction work throughout the winter as weather conditions allow, pending all required approvals. Pile burning is meant to treat slash, like branches, piled by thinning crews with the aim of reducing flammable fuels. The decision to proceed with each pile burn will depend on multiple factors, including snowpack, air quality, ventilation, forecast weather and wind, and resource availability. We use prescribed fire to help reduce overgrown vegetation and protect local communities, infrastructure, and natural resources from wildfires.
