THE APOSTROPHE RULES YOU'RE PROBABLY GETTING WRONG
•It shows possession — Sarah's book. The dog's leash. The children's toys.
•It shows contraction — Don't (do not). Can't (cannot). It's (it is or it has).
•It NEVER makes plurals — Apple's for sale? Wrong. Apples for sale. Correct.
•Its vs It's — It's = it is or it has. Its = belongs to it. No apostrophe for possession here.
•Plural possessives — Dogs' leash (one leash, many dogs). Children's toys (many toys, many children).
•Singular names ending in S — James's car or James' car? Both accepted. Pick one. Stick with it.
•Joint possession — Sarah and John's house (they share it). Sarah's and John's houses (they own separately).
•Decades and abbreviations — 1990s (correct). 1990's (wrong). CDs (correct). CD's (wrong).
•Missing letters — Gov't (government). '90s (1990s). Rock 'n' roll. Apostrophe fills the gap.
•Never use apostrophes with possessive pronouns — Hers, yours, theirs, ours, its. No apostrophe. Ever.
