If there is no criminal basis for detention, they must be released immediately and reunited with their families. Iran’s nuclear program has long been a cause of grave concern, and its missile attacks across Israel threaten regional peace. Today, I convened our National Security Council to receive an update on the situation and to ensure that all necessary steps will be taken to protect our nationals and our diplomatic missions in the region. Canada reaffirms Israel’s right to defend itself and to ensure its security. We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and move towards a diplomatic resolution.

Israel has the right to defend itself—including by disarming Tehran’s genocidal nuclear program. It cannot wait until the regime has capabilities for a nuclear strike. We should all hope that this is the end of the regime’s nuclear program and that the great Persian people can now rise up to reclaim their country from the totalitarian regime. All levels of government must take extra steps to protect Canada’s Jewish community from vile antisemites who may use these events as an excuse for more acts of violence.

Canada’s first ever “Ramadan Mubarak” sign was installed this morning outside of City Hall in Toronto! The installation of this sign was an initiative led by Muslim high school students in Toronto. We note that Canada’s voted “yes” on a UN Vote today calling for a permanent ceasefire and on settlements. We and many others have been urging the government to speak clearly and forcefully in standing up for human rights. Canada did the right thing by changing its vote today, and it represents an important step. Canada must continue by taking other important measures, including imposing sanctions on the extremist Netanyahu cabinet, as well as officially recognizing the State of Palestine. Alongside their continued call for a permanent ceasefire, these actions are necessary to stand for justice and to call for peace.

I spoke today with leaders from Ottawa’s Jewish community, who feel deeply hurt by the statement issued by Capital Pride and have significant concerns about inclusion and safety at this year's event.   I also had a good discussion with Capital Pride's executive director and encouraged the organization to meet with Jewish community leaders as soon as possible to hear their concerns and try to work together in a spirit of collaboration and inclusivity before this year's events take place.   Ottawa is a welcoming, caring, and inclusive city, all qualities that Pride aims to embody.
