@skeuomorphology Makes a lot of sense. It’s been consistently high around here for a while now.

@SarahRensta It can be as simple a thing as one person being off ill. Reporting often starts to get patchy in areas under real pressure - that's why I always say to pay extra attention if an area is reporting 0% or a null result.

The PCR positivity map is out, with national positivity holding at 9%. I'm a bit dubious about that 9%, because most of the areas dropping out of reporting this week are ones that were heading for very high rates. 1/6

@skeuomorphology Is there a reason NE have suddenly dropped out of reporting? Or is it just a lag

I'm afraid things have gone really pear-shaped on Teesside and Tyneside. That figure for Stockton-on-Tees is on a decent amount of testing. 3/7

The PCR positivity map is out. National positivity has risen to 8.83% - but remember the data only goes up to the 15th, 7 days ago. Everywhere in orange or darker on the map is above that figure. jamestindall.info/skeuomorpholog… 1/7

Day 5 of covid. Somehow, the first 3 days were symptomless besides a burning nose and bit of congestion. Today, they’ve hit with a vengeance - feel 💩 but have so far managed to avoid passing it on. Seriously thought I’d got away with a mild dose. #Covid #summerholidays

@CounsellingSam Just tested positive here this morning. Terrified I’ve infected parents. I am still cautious, take managed risk only and have a reduced social life.

Uncle comes home from Aus and stays @ mine so he can be careful. I do nothing, go barely anywhere and live at the parents. This morning I tested positive and now I feel like I am screaming into the void in the hope that by some miracle I have not infected them - god knows how. 😭

@skeuomorphology Do we have any indication why hartlepool seems consistently high, or is it just that they’re consistent with reporting in that area?

Much of the rising positivity across the country is seen in areas that were previously very low, now matching or reaching levels that were seen in hotspots. Essex, Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire are a good example: now all above the national average. 2/8

The PCR positivity map is out. National positivity is up another 0.3 to 6.3%, and in my view that figure is certainly lower than the actual level. I'll explain why in what follows. jamestindall.info/skeuomorpholog… 1/8

3. Every teacher needs to know about the EEF’s Reading House. It’s a powerful model showing that fluency is the bridge - the doorway from decoding to comprehension. Until pupils are fluent, comprehension will remain out of reach. Love the explanation videos of this visual too 👉 educationendowmentfoundation.org.uk/education-evid…

After months of ‘The Big Listen,’ this took ChatGPT seconds: If Ofsted were to undergo meaningful reform to become more supportive and less high-stakes while still raising standards, several key changes could be introduced. These ideas would be well-received by the profession while ensuring accountability remains strong: 1. Shift to a Developmental Model Instead of a High-Stakes Judgment •Replace the single-word judgments (Outstanding, Good, Requires Improvement, Inadequate) with a narrative-driven report focusing on strengths and areas for development. •Introduce a coaching approach, where inspectors work alongside school leaders to provide actionable feedback without fear of immediate repercussions. •Use peer review systems where successful schools help support others in their improvement journey. 2. Longer-Term, Holistic School Evaluations •Move to a multi-visit approach over a longer period (e.g., two years), giving schools time to show progress rather than being judged on a snapshot. •Consider a three-stage process: 1.Initial collaborative review (self-evaluation and discussion with an inspector). 2.Ongoing mentoring support for improvement. 3.Final summary report based on progress. 3. Remove “Gotcha” Culture & Focus on Honest Self-Evaluation •Schools should be able to submit their own evidence base, including improvements made since the last inspection, rather than relying on inspectors catching them out on the day. •Inspections should feel more like a joint review rather than an adversarial test. 4. Wellbeing & Workload Consideration •Schools should be assessed on their ability to maintain staff wellbeing and work-life balance to ensure long-term retention and effectiveness. •Introduce pupil wellbeing measures (engagement, attendance, pastoral support) into inspections as a key factor in a school’s effectiveness. 5. Ensure Greater Consistency in Inspections •Train inspectors to have current, relevant school leadership experience, ensuring credibility. •Schools should be able to challenge and discuss inspection findings before publication, ensuring fairness. 6. Separate Safeguarding from Overall Inspection •Keep safeguarding a non-negotiable, but assess it separately from overall school performance. •Schools should not be downgraded entirely due to single administrative safeguarding errors if there is no actual child risk. 7. Replace the “Outstanding” Grade with a “Leading School” Model •Instead of “Outstanding,” create a “Leading School” category that reflects a school’s contribution to the wider system (mentoring other schools, sharing best practice). •Encourage more collaboration, rather than competition, between schools. 8. Public Accountability Without Public Shaming •Publish reports that highlight improvements and strengths first, rather than just focusing on deficits. •Make the language used in reports constructive rather than punitive to reduce the anxiety associated with inspections. These changes would help restore trust between schools and Ofsted, improve morale, and still ensure high standards without the current fear-driven approach.

A final thread from Geoff and Margaret: Retirement Tales was born on this date three years ago. As we all headed into 2022, I wanted to share the adventures that Margaret and I were about to have, as we answered The Call and returned to the classroom. 1/
