Loved working on this beautiful, funny, love-filled essay. Features majestic glaciers, a reference to Drake, and stinky penguins. @rgay, from @AFARmedia's Winter 2023 print issue.

Same here! Great job, Ketong, on covering the complicated subject of voluntourism. I don't know how to get in touch with you, but I'd love to get you a copy of my book "Tread Brightly: Notes on Ethical Travel."
Jacob Kushner@JacobKushner

Honored that student Ketong Li cited my, @PhilippaBiddle & @sarika008's reporting in her award-winning @nytimes essay. nytimes.com/2022/06/17/lea… @missporters The Voluntourist’s Dilemma: nytimes.com/2016/03/22/mag…

This comment made my day! To me, travel is not just about escaping the world, but engaging with the world more deeply. Travel journalism IMO should be a vehicle to help people see the world in a more complex, curious, open-hearted way ✨

@sarika008 Finally got through my Spring 2022 @AFARmedia issue. So many publications/tour companies/etc make bold claims about brining attention to Responsible Tourism but this issue was SO much more than lip service! Looking forward to my next issue more than ever 🎉

@sharmadillo Hello, friend! You might like this essay I published a few years ago. My answer would be yes, because I think kids should be exposed to lots of ideas and thinkers, and if one doesn't stand the test of time, it could prompt (an age-appropriate) discussion. brightthemag.com/reading-dicken…

Gen Xer parents who read Dickens in their colonial/ post colonial childhood - would you recommend Dickens to your children? Somhow the stories of poverty and inequality during Europe's peak industrial revolution left an indelible mark on me... do they stand the test of time?

My dreams of strolling around Paris with a croissant and beret were dashed when I arrived to inclement weather, stroller in hand. But there is still a lot to love about the City of Light in the cold. My first digital piece for @AFARmedia: afar.com/magazine/what-…

At 62, Dr. Farmer passed away far too early. He still had so much left to give. Though, by the same token, he has left an indelible mark on the world. He changed the field of global health. I hope he rests easy, and it's on the rest of us to continue his legacy. A luta continua.

A few of the lessons I learned from Dr. Paul Farmer, my professor, mentor, and lifelong inspiration: 1) Values show up not in what you say, but what you do. Dr. Farmer spent so much time in Haiti, and truly lived *in community* while there, seemingly with ease and grace.
