Who remembers the NZ Sesqui 1990 Carnival? It was in Wellington so the rest of the country ignored it but so did Wellingtonians. What was billed as "37 days and nights of never-to-be-repeated excitement" was so poorly attended it closed after just 12 days owing $6.4M ($14M today)

Went for a drive today & stumbled upon the absolutely gorgeous St. Mary of Antioch, in Knotting, Bedfordshire…now possibly my favourite church I have ever visited ❤️ A photo thread…

WWII NZ 📻 listeners responded massively to hearing the voices of loved ones fighting on the other side of the world, in an era before even international phone calls. (Ngā mihi to @AtakohuM for her awhi with this article for NZJPH) phanza.org.nz/wp-content/upl…

@LI_politico Best advice I ever got was to scale back expectations of what you can achieve with a newborn in the house, like waaaay back: “If you and the baby are fed and clothed, you’re doing great.” That’s it. Food and warmth. The rest can wait.

And if even half of what she said transpired the night she met Prince is true 😕 yikes.

“However cordial the initial business transaction here—the process by which Prince allowed her to record and release his song—forget all that. This is a hostile takeover. Sinéad embodies this song on a molecular level. She changes the fundamental meaning of this song.”

If you remember the impact of Sinéad O’Connor and that 1990 video for ‘Nothing compares 2u’, this podcast is fascinating listening. RIP theringer.com/platform/amp/2…

@WajahatAli I remember watching ToD at the time it came out and being so disappointed. Even in those “unenlightened” times the racist caricatures seemed very off and the ‘screaming damsel’ throughout was just horrible. It seemed such a waste.

Been re-watching all the #IndianaJones movies before Dial of Destiny. Here's my take: 1) Raiders: Still holds up, moves like lightning, & I forgot how good Karen Allen is as Marion. 2) Temple of Doom: Amazing first 15 minutes + final 15 minutes, & amazing racism - just...wow

@MediaHistoryNow So good! The plan was to make this a permanent thing but WWII intervened and the station manager became a member of NZ’s wartime mobile broadcasting unit

A 1930s remote truck used by Radio-Cité in Paris; it roamed the streets of the French capital and reported live on events from across the city for news blocks known as "La Voix de Paris" ("The Voice of Paris"):

@MediaHistoryNow This graphic is very reminiscent of the original logo of New Zealand’s Radio Hauraki - a “pirate” music station started in the 1960s

@wdwunlockmagic Tokyo Disney is best of all, which is why we go there now in preference to either American park. Sorry.

Can we please install thermal foot baths at some NZ museums. Nothing like soaking the dogs while gazing out at Henry Moores. (Hakone Open Air Museum,Japan)

Got plans for the weekend? Saturday's London Coronation of King Charles III might not be on everyone's calendar, but back in 1911 the crowning of his great-grandfather, King George V was a Very Big Deal in Christchurch. 1/3

Like “Skin” Moore of Taihape, who was wounded in 1941, separated from his patrol and thought to be a prisoner of war. Instead, he walked 200 miles through the desert with minimal supplies until he was picked up by the Free French 10 days later. (Image ATL ref. DA-02090-F)
