Students can bully others, they can be bullied, or they may witness bullying. For our final question, think about the social and emotional needs of those involved in bullying #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A5: Unfortunately kids will eventually leave school and be in environments where no one is going to advocate on their behalf or shield them from the harshness of others so it is critical they have the tools to take care of themselves #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A5: Besides needing to be comforted and reassured of their value, students need to be taught and given the mental tools to manage and navigate their own personal challenges #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@sarahdeleo05@RutgersAltRoute This past year I've had the pleasure of running two 6th grade SEL session each week and it really is a wonderful opportunity to teach kids about life and break from the typical curriculum #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A4: As far as learning opportunities, I've relished the opportunity to spend some time teaching SEL lessons, and using concrete examples to what happens when emotions are damaged #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
Reflect on your knowledge and understanding of harassment, intimidation, and bullying (HIB) from course readings and your experience to respond to Question 4 #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A4: HIB is also frustrating for the obvious reasons that the behavior is undesirable, hurtful, and impedes learning. It can be draining to deal with it frequently #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A4: HIB does provide moments to get a deeper glimpse into the minds and thoughts of your students and can give you a more thorough understanding of your students #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@PetrosMouc25601@RutgersAltRoute I certainly agree with your preference towards in-person meetings and their effectiveness, and key points can always be documented or summarized via email after the fact #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute In my school we mostly use Google Docs, Skype, and e-mail. Nothing fancy. But I think in person meetings are the most effective approach when possible because it is so much easier to exchange ideas and collaborate on new concepts. #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
During last Saturday's #EdTech chat, it was noted that technology can foster collaboration. For Question 3, share your practices (high-tech and low-tech) for collaborating with families and colleagues to create a safe learning environment for all students #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A3: Communication with families is mainly via email and in-person meetings. Collaboration with each other also follows suit. We mostly meet and talk with each other and then record anything we need to via email #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute There is a lot of teaching that needs 2 be done, ss need 2 learn empathy. Ss need 2 learn not everything is bullying, Ss need 2 learn what bullying is. Use restorative circles when Ss are having conflicts, so it does not get to a level of bullying #TeacherED#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute I think setting an example and embodying the change you want to see in your kids is really important. Being consistent and having integrity and showing your kids that. Calling it out every time u see it. Being deliberate with why these behaviors are toxic #teachered#safeschools
For Question 2, reflect on the materials you’ve read and your professional experience. Consider sharing factors that may be specific to your content area and grade level #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A2: Immediate and sincere action when students start to tease and pick on each other for whatever reason and being consistent in your enforcement. Let them know from the get-go what you will not tolerate #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
To start us off, here's Question 1! When considering your "practices", you can think about your classroom management, curriculum, instructional practices, the academic/social/emotional skills you teach, and the physical/virtual space of your classroom #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A1- To create a safe learning environment I start off the year by establishing clear expectations for behavior and respect in the classroom. Throughout the year I also focus a lot on social-emotional learning to build empathy and kindness in the classroom. #TeacherEd#SafeSchools
@RutgersAltRoute A1: I establish my expectations explicitly from the start and make it clear that all are welcome and we are never allowed to exclude or target someone because they are different
